hi
i wanted to know if any of you have used this, i took my newfie pup last week to the vet for first jabs, she noticed that he had dandruff, did a test and said he had some mites(i am sure he got them from george as he has had them before and was scratching recently so if back on the medicated shampoo)she went off to find some tablets, when she came back she said she was to give it by injection, one injection every two weeks. i said ok,is it safe etc and she said yes. he was fine but i did google it later on that night and found out it was only for cattle and could be fatal in dogs.i rang the vets straight away, they said it was safe in dogs but was not liscenced. as i said he was fine, but is due another vaccination and another jab of panomec on monday and i dont know if i should let him,
any ideas,
thankyou xxx

Well I would think if the medicated shampoo will do the trick and kill the mites, you'd probably feel better yourself using it. And at no risk either. Then again, you can find just about anything on the internet telling you anything you're looking to hear so I would hope your vet knows best. Ask if they have used it on many dogs before etc and see what you think.

Sounds like panomec could be similar to , if not the same family as Ivermectin, which as Ivomec is used in sheep & cattle for parasite control. I would not be happy about a vet that used it on dogs! Some breeds have a serious reaction to ivermectin. So much so that I wouldn't even use a spot-on for my dog (one of the breeds that can react to it) that contains a relative of ivermectin, Selamectin which is licenced for dogs.

Also injecting it is a bit risky; it is often used for small animals to control mites and I have hear horror stories where vets got the dosage wrong. In small animals it can be used topically, just a tiny spot on the ear, and works as well.... but many vets don't know that and still insist on injecting it.

Why not just use Stronghold spot-on, which controls mites and is safe for dogs?

Try this: http://www.neemgenie.co.uk/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=HA02&Category_Code=007&Product_Count=1
apart from being gentle and natural it is effective.

I've used panomec before on staffords with dermodex, it is also known as ivermectin. It should be given on their food for the best results, however it is unlicenced in the UK for the use on dogs & most vets will make you sign a disclaimer 1st.

Hi Jo
panomec is ivomec.
It can be used for demodex (mange), but mainly used for lungworm and heartworm. We use it on our seal pups for the treatment of lungworm. I vaguely remember it being used for mange in dogs, and vaguely remember it shouldnt be used in collies or collie crosses (something to do with their eyes???).
Im suprised they chose such a potent treatment when there are many spot on topical skin treatments, and washes available.

well i was not happy as i was not told before hand, i took him back and told them i did not want him to have the jab,so he has a stronghold pipet to be used next monday,it was silly as he only had a bit of dandruff, new vet though, not the one i usually deal with
thanks for all the advice

If you're in the same situation in the future, remember benzyl benzoate. :)
