Just a query about showing pugs - are their teeth looked at as with most breeds?

This mainly relates to junior handling and I'm interested to know as when asked to show teeth, the lads dad said "we don't show pugs teeth"

I'm sure that you don't show teeth at the moment but I have a feeling that in the near future that might all change as the KC 'fit for function' and pushing dogs health might have judges looking, its known that with some small breeds their teeth can be quite bad.

It has been a bit of a bone of contention.  Breed specialist never have looked at pug teeth, as you pretty much meet the breed standard as long as they are not visible when mouth closed.  Hoever since the whoel "fit for function drive" quite a few all rounders are insisting on looking in themouths, which is a bit difficult becasue as a breed pugs don't look on this favourably!  I teach all my pups to be happy wiht the mouth being examined, after all you want to clean the teeth, dont you?  But somewhere at about 6 montsh the majority of they catch on to the idea that the mouth stays clamped shut.  Over the years at open shows I have had to hang on to a few indignant wrestling pugs as judges not in the know try to examine the teeth.  Of my whole bunch there is only 1 who will happpily have his mouth examined.
So, to try and be concises about all that, best to be prepared for judges to want to look now, but also be prepared that the pug may not go along with it!

Hi Gwen, Thanks for your reply to the poster's question. I too have been wondering what the situation is now re the few breeds which do not have their teeth examined.  Now health is paramount when judging (and indeed always has been) I wondered how you could establish a healthy mouth without inspecting it but didn't really like to ask the question.  I think I just assumed that as I teach my dogs (hounds) to have their teeth cleaned and their  mouths examined by vets and judges, then all breeds were the same But after your experiences  will have some sympathy when I see a wriggley, wrestley pug being examined on the table.!

Well my Elkhounds must think they are pugs as they take it as a personal affront having their teeth looked at.

A couple of mine have hated it from about 4 months when the teeth change, and after that they try to avoid it if they think they can ;)  they are best with no nonsense judges, but anyone airy fairy or soft and the judge finds hands empty and grinning pup ;)

i was told by the breeders of timo our king charles(not cav) spaniel that judges dont bother with the teeth as they are more interested in the upsweep of the jaw,but since we have taken him to ringcraft we have always had his mouth looked at so hes comfortable should an all-rounder wish to see his bite.he's one of the few in this breed totally ok with it and the table as hes been brought up with it as routine.in fact his bite is spot-on.i think some breeders in the past have been complacent about teeth number/alignment purely because the mouths werent looked at,but have seen more and more judges looking now.surprising how many adult dogs struggle on the table now as judges try to see inside their mouths.roy.

Have to say I've always been shocked as to why all breeds aren't checked, but there again when you do look at certain breeds mouths where they usually aren't checked it shocks me to see what they are like too because mainly I suppose due to me seeing scissor bites and the odd level bites it seems strange to see something different, but in many of these breeds, I have noticed that teeth are all over the place as well.

Not saying that the above would be as a whole, but in the very few that I have seen they've all had horrible teeth also.
