Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / Wafcol v Wainwrights Salmon & Potato Dry Complete

Does anyone use either of these for allergies and have an opinion on quality of the food? We have been advised by the vet to put Treacle onto a hypoallergenic food as she has problems with her ears (itchy and inflamed despite anti histamine, steroids and anti-yeast treatments). She will be going for allergy blood tests in August but we have been advised to change her to this in the meantime. We know she is allergic to cheese and probably other dairy but not what else is causing this itch.

I got her some Wafcol at the weekend but noticed Wainwrights and thought it looked roughly the same in terms of ingredients but there is a big price differential £41 v £30 in PAH. I know I could buy cheaper on the web but does anyone know if these foods are equivalent in terms of quality and palatability for the dogs?

Any info would be useful and if anyone is any good at comparing ingredient lists they are:

wafcol

Wainwrights
Ingredients:
Salmon Protein (Min. 23%), Potato (Min. 21%), Sorghum, Whole Grain Barley (Min. 10%), Atlantic Fish Meal, Whole Linseed (Min. 4%), Sugar Beet Pulp (Min. 5%), Sunflower Oil, Dicalcium Phosphate, Alfalfa, Natural Seawood (Min. 0.5%), Sodium Chloride, Potassium Chloride, Methionine, Marigold Extract, Yucca Extract, Rosemary Extract.

Thanks

I'd personally avoid anything containing grains, so going by the list of ingredients I'd opt for the Wafcol.

Have you considered Orijen foods (http://www.orijenpetfoods.co.uk/)? Much better ingredients IMO.

I've know Wafcol salmon & potato and vegetarian both to be beneficial for Westies with skin problems when the owners don't want to feed raw.

Thanks, I think Wafcol might be better, but I wondered if any one had allergy experience with either?

Orijen is very expensive for what it is and I don't think it is hypoallergenic either as it has eggs and chicken in it but the fish one might be?

Years ago we used to feed Wafcol salmon and potato to one of our girls who had allergy problems, it helped her enormously, we used to get it direct from Wafcol.

Westies with skin problems are usually allergy related. :)

Hi Westcoast, I missed your earlier post as I was looking at the orijen site and took ages to reply :D My MIL had a Westie with skin problems so I must check what they fed. I'd forgotten that as it was a few years ago. Thanks!

Thanks also henri that is good to know!

Briedog, did you ever manage to get it under control? Treacle is only 4 and is perfectly healthy otherwise, her skin itch is kept under control with the anti- histamine but not the ears!

I think i will try wafcol on my westie girl. See my post in health.

Probably worth a try at least :-) Let me know how you get on? Treacle's ears are slightly less inflamed today - we are doing half and half with her previous food but I'va also put some Tea tree cream on the ear flap to try to soothe it so I'm not sure what is calming it down. (treacle is a setter not a westie so long dangly ears)
