Topic Other Boards / Foo / unusual pet names
- By dogmad1234 Date 23.06.09 07:59 UTC
Thinking about our cat Monster made me think about other pets we had with unusual names. We also had Toast a tortoiseshell cat who was the colour of burnt toast. When Toast had kittens they were named Marmalade, Jam, Butter and Marmite. We kept Marmite a beautiful Tortie and white girl and she kept the name. The others did get their names changed when they went to their new homes.
We also fostered a lurcher puppy for a while called Mouse because of her big ears and very mouselike face.
What unusual names have your pets been called and why?

I have a GSD x Beardie called Feck...raises a few eyebrows and I`m sure the neighbours think I have Torrets syndrome!, we have a cat called Tickle (because he has long whiskers and they tickle you!) a cat called Calico (thats what colour she is) and we had a Bulldog called Moose (not sure why it just suited him lol) and of course we have Tangle the Komondor (no real need for name explanation lol).

My brother had 2 of our kittens a few years back and named them Rizla and Roach!

My British Bulldog when I was growing up was called Steal, I had 2 canarys called Smarties and Jelly-tots and my little brother had a hamster whos name would change on a daily basis, the ones I can remember are Bruno, Fluffy, Optimus Prime and Lion-o.

Where do I start LOL. It's mainly been the cats. Many years ago I bred a kitten that was a Tortie Point Colourpoint, so I called her Tosca Tortie. That was a play on words, Tosca being a Swedish type of cake and tårta in Swedish means cake. From there it went on. Tosca became the mother of for instance Vanilla Heart (another type of cake), Vanilla became the father of IceCream. There's been loads of other tosca varieties as well: Coconut Tosca, Lingontosca, Blueberry Tosca, Almond Tosca, Toscaflarn (a type of biscuit so her pet name is Biscuit). I then had a litter of 4 cream kittens and a Lilac, so the creams got sun names: Sunlight, Sunshine, Sunray and the lilac was called Dusk. Mating Dusk (pet name Dusky) to IceCream I kept a kitten I called Dawn, after dad. Dawn's kittens then became Daybreak, Daylight and Twilight, and Twilight's kittens were Sunrise, Moonlight and Eclipse. (All of these being pedigree names but most of them also used as pet names. I still have for instance IceCream, Sunrise, Moonlight. It used to be hilarious going to the vet and have them call in Vanilla and IceCream!)

I had two kittens rejected by the mother, they were premature and so incredibly tiny that I called them Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse. The male got shortened to Mouse as a pet name, the he grew to the size of a small elephant LOL.

One kitten I bred showed already at birth that he was going to be very nice indeed so I called him Jackpot. He fathered Lottery, Bingo, Rollover, HotPick, Blackjack, Thunderball and Bonusball. HotPick fathered Lucky Dip. I've had Happy Easter and April Fool who were born on 1st of April and that was Easter that year -they were called that as well. Funny Bunny who had a harelip.

A current cat I have is called Ugly Betty -to everyone's horror, but I point out that isn't the entire point of the TV character that she ISN'T ugly at all, just not like a model?

Dogs -when I got my first Malinois her main purpose was to guard the house, so I wanted a name for a tough bitch. A friend suggested, as a laugh, Ripley -from the alien movies -now there's a tough bitch. I loved it and Ripley it was. Her first son became Arnie after Schwarzenegger but after that the pet names have been more common.

My husband got a red Maine Coon cat and his pedigree name was Here Comes The Sun so his pet name became Ringo. Hubby is John, so when we had a red male kitten born lats year and we already had John and Ringo that kitten became George. Last week another red male kitten was born so naturally he had to be Paul.

I could go on forever LOL.

When I showed longhaired guinea pigs, I had one born without front teeth.  Couldn't let it go as pet (he had his own cheese grater for food.)  I couldn't think of a name for him, so my ex husband named him Dracula.

We have Pepsi, so called as I drink Brandy and coke and WOULD not call her Brandy! Treacle was named as when we first saw her she had sprouty black fur between her toes and Ron said it looked like she had dipped her toes into treacle! Pepsi's daughter Merlot, named because I like a drop of the red stuff !!and anyway all puppies like a good wine (Whine!!) and Merlots daughter...well Chablis of course..what else do you call a child of Merlot!.
I had a big black GSD named "BB" short for...well Black Ba****d and he could be at times!
Jet, also a black GSD obviously!
Tzarina (Rina) named for her father Tzar.
Zip a GSD who had a very serious op at 5 weeks old and had a row of sutures down his tummy....!
Candy a collie of my youth who had black and white in patches that looked like stripes hence Candy striped.
Cats of my childhood, Billy Bonkers, Halfa (she was black to her middle then tortie from there back!), Suzzy Boo Boo, Pashima, Mums Siamese were Pye-whacket and her three daughters, Emily Anne and Charlotte.
Daft arn't we??

> Monkey Man!!

That's funny! :)
- By Goldmali Date 23.06.09 11:54 UTC
I should perhaps have mentioned one of our most unusual names. The dog in my avatar is called Z. That's his full pet name, one letter. But it isn't pronounced the English way, i.e. "Zed", it is pronounced the American way, so his name is "Zee". Causes no end of confusion but is because he used to have an American owner and she named him.
- By kenya [gb] Date 23.06.09 13:13 UTC
I had a Toast, she was a Border T, her registered name was burnt toast.
We had a teabag, Bisto, Gravy and PJ's, Nellie, Pickles, love different names!
- By Tarn [gb] Date 23.06.09 13:17 UTC
When we went to get some rescue kittens there was a tiny tabby who climbed up OH's legs, jacket, up the mesh of the pen etc - we took him home and he became Velcro! The one we'd actually originally gone to see was grey (blue) and white, so a friend came up with Bluetack, as it suited her colour and was another 'sticky' name, lol!

We used to have a dog called Jed because someone pulled him out of the canal in Wolverhampton city centre as a puppy 'half jed' - Black Country for 'half dead'!
- By diane74 [gb] Date 23.06.09 13:27 UTC
Our cat first started off as Fifa (after the Fifa football game for the playstation), which turned to Fi-Fi Lee after Bruce Lee because she would karate chop or paw Bo around her face, like he did in the films lol.
When my sister, brother and I where young we had three goldfish called Bit, And & Bot, I think they were named after something on tv not to sure.
We also had a tortoise, of course everyone says there slow but heck he was not, hence his name Speedy. :-D

When we 1st married many moons ago, i went past a pet shop and saw this dear little kitten sitting in the shop window,i rang my hubby from the phone box then and asked if i could buy him...well needless to say he said no.
Well i was desperate to have him,so bought him anyway, and faced the music when i got home.
Well as you can imagine hubby not happy, bearing in mind we already had 2 dogs and a cat at home.
We didnt talk for a few hours, then he suddenly said ok you can keep him providing you call him THE FONZ...i agreed straight away but hated the name....didnt have much choice then.
We laugh about it now.

My best friends little rescue dog is called Dave, he really does suit it in a weird way! another friend has a dog called Bean.

My Chihuahua's name is Tiger, not sure if its that unusual? We didnt like any fluffy cute names and most little dogs ive met have them type of names, he needed a name that suited him so we came up with Tiger :-)
- By Dogz Date 24.06.09 07:03 UTC

> I was in the vets with my Chi last week, just for booster. I jokingly called him Killer

I used to know a little pap girl called Killer but she was a real little lady.

When I was young we took in a black stray cat in a terrible state and my mum called him Trubshaw.  We only had him for 3 months and as soon as he was well again he was off, I think he was looking for someone as he had really rough pads like a dog, he must have been traveling a long time.  Our own cat was called Murgatroyd and she was over the moon when he left.
- By sugar [gb] Date 26.06.09 10:26 UTC
