Yesterday while walking in the woods our son came across a young deer that had apparently been mauled by a dog someone said they had seen the dog  . he rang the rspca to find it had already been reported but they wern't sure when they could attend but then rang a local wildlife hopsital and while talking to them the rspca did arrive.
Very sad but the rspca decided that it would not surrive and asked him to go while they dealt with it.
He was really upset but I am very proud that he was so sensible and dealt with this so well even if it had a sad ending

Well done him! He did the right thing by not trying to move it. An injured and frightened deer can cause nasty injuries to people - their hooves are like razors.

Also worth mentioning that this is the time of year when people sometimes come across 'abandoned' fawns while out walking, and try to help by taking them to a vet, which is of course totally the wrong thing to do. The fawn has been purposely left there by its mother, who will come back to feed it at intervals - kidnapping her baby will cause both of them severe distress and can even lead to the death of the fawn, because humans aren't nearly as good at raising them as their own mothers.
