I know this is a bit of a touchy subject but I'm planning on cooking veal for OH for V Day on Saturday & was wondering if:

1) anyone of you had cooked it & had any recipe ideas?
2) where can I buy good quality, british veal? how long can I store it in the fridge?

Hope you can help!

Oooh! Excellent thread.  I shall be watching with interest.  Veal and also Venison are two meats I would like to cook soon.

Nothing wrong with British Veal :-)  The calves have a short life but a comfortable one. For those concerned about animal welfare you're far better buying British veal than continental pork.

As Tigger2 says the buying of British veal is to be encouraged.  I suspect you will have to order it through your butcher but no harm in asking at your local Hypermarket.........often! :-)
The main thing about cooking veal is it is very tender so does not need much cooking.  Probably the best known method is coated in crumbs, Veal Schnitzel.  Lots of recipes on the net.

Veal shnitzel for me too!

Just to mention to Ganitecitygirl, Asda have some venison steaks on promotion at the mo.  2 packs of 2 steaks for £8.00, which works out at £2.00 each. Had it yesterday and was lovely.

Veal in a cream, mushroom and white wine sauce..... Is it only breakfast time? :-(

Just one thing. It might not take long to cook, but make sure it's cooked through thoroughly or you could end up with salmonella - I did!

Waitrose do British rose veal.  Cook it as you would beef fillet - gently and quickly.  I've had pink veal with no side effects.  Yum!

I'm only going by what they told me at the hospital (I've never been so ill in my life!). They said veal should be treated like chicken, not beef. :-)
