Topic Dog Boards / Health / Zuma in vets - house is empty
- By tatty-ead [gb] Date 18.12.08 12:02 UTC
Left Zuma in vets at 9.00 this morning...........sat at home and the house seems so empty :-(

He got hold of some bits off the table last Wed (Highlighter pen, watch, filter for hoover, tissues etc. He had suddenly found if he put his front feet on chair he could streeetch and just reach stuff that was pushed out of his way. I came home and found it all strewn down hall :-O . He was sick on Friday evening so vets Sat am. usual 'starve 24 hrs etc' Since then he is fine 90% of time but not eating, took him back yesterday evening and he is now there for GA, X-ray and ???. They will ring me 'after lunch' to let me know what is happening.

Meanwhile I am sat on my own (OH out in meeting till at least 4pm) and worrying, in a way I am relieved he is there today rather than putting it off and then 'panic' next week but the house is empty and quiet. someone send me a hug please.

One hug as ordered... they do eat so much rubbish I hope its just a precaution no real problems HUGS...
- By Stormy84 [gb] Date 18.12.08 12:11 UTC
Fingers and paws crossed Zuma gets the all clear. It's such a horrible feeling coming home without them- try and keep yourself busy until you hear from your vet as there is no up side to sitting there worrying. Lots of hugs from us (even though you probably don't want a hug from Storm as she is a bit stinky today!). xxx
- By Teri Date 18.12.08 12:13 UTC
Hi Chris,

huge {{{hugs}}} heading right at ya :-p  At least Zuma is getting an exploratory to ensure anything causing a problem is swiftly removed.  They eat everything, don't they!  I woke up this morning to a large pebble in a pool of bile at the foot of the bed - pupster's passion unfortunately.

Try not to worry - Zuma's with the experts and better this happening now than trying to get emergency treatment this time next week when everything will be so much more stressful.  It's worse when alone at home but you've got mates here to buck you up and keep you feeling too isolated :)

Try this silly game - not exactly Christmassy but it does use the word avalanche LOL - not requiring of skills or ability to do riddles may have your brain tied up enough to not go into overdirve while not distracting you from the phone.

More {{{hugs}}}

Oh Chris!!

The wait turns you inside out doesn't it!
((((((((Gert big colossal HUG!!)))))))))))
*Gert big mug of hot choccie with extra marshmallows!*
(might even be a teensie drop of *hic* Baileys in there too ;) )

Everything crossed here for Zuma xx
Keep us posted x

LOADS of big {{{hugs}}} to you and to Zuma. They do worry you dont they, I have to leave everything out of reach for my Cavalier as she will eat anything (she came with me last night to my hairdresser's house as he loves dogs - she was showing a bit too much interest in his cat's litter tray - eek!)

Fingers crossed that the vets have some positive news for you soon.

Thanks everyone for the hugs.
Update!
Vet just rung, done xray and no foreign objects showing but part of his gut looks enlarged, my call - they could wake him and see what happens next few days or keep him under and open him to have a proper look, went thru list of what he had trashed (foam rubber, plastic bag highlighter etc) which would not show on plate and decided that open him now was wiser than possible panic over w/end or xmas eve/day.

SO now I am back to waiting for phone again, plus I wont get me 'hairy hooligan' back home till tomorrow :-( .

Hi again Chris,

I think that was a VERY good call :)  Better to get the full picture with one GA than risk having Zuma go through this again.  I know you'll not be relaxed until he's home in your arms so sending still more cyber hugs your way and a word or two being mentioned to Him Upstairs that Zuma is soon back on the recovery ward and you get a phone call which sets your mind at peace asap.

Take care, Teri x

Weeell,
Had another call from vets, they couldn't find anything in his gut.............new problem... why hasn't he been wanting to eat since Sat, will talk to them later..........BUT while rootling around they had found his undecended testicle, did I want them to remove it (yes please) and what about the other (no thank you as he is just 17 months and not mature yet, (GSD)).
So for the third time I am waiting for the phone call ........this time (hopefully) to say he is ok and awake.

Chris

ps wonder what Insurance will pay for as GA and investigation should be covered but not the removal of other bit.
- By Teri Date 18.12.08 16:19 UTC
Hi Chris,

thanks for letting us know how he's doing - and how you're getting along too :)  Re the insurance I'd imagine your vet would only need to bill you for the cost of the GA and exploratory operation as removing the undescended testes would take no time at all in relation to the purpose of the original procedure.

As to his not eating, better that he's had a full exam as any internal problems would have shown at the same time so hopefully he's just been going through a faddy phase by coincidence.

Everything crossed you get the call soon to say he's up and about and you can relax overnight :)
regards Teri

I'm so sorry to hear zuma is having problems.
Lets hope he will start eating when he gets home after spending some time at the vets...
I think you did the right thing getting it checked now instead of waiting and hey they got the testicle so that is out now so no need for operation later.

Sasha sends some doggy guardian angels to Zuma's direction, she is giving her very good guardian angels to others now that she is better!
They should be there soon as you are so close to us!

Best wishes to the Hairy Hooligan.  I always hate the bare look of the place when the dogs aren't there to fill the floor with their odd sleeping shapes or fill the air with the sound of contented snoring, I hope he's back soon.

PS who is the Neil Young fan?  Zuma is one of my favourite albums!
- By STARRYEYES Date 18.12.08 21:56 UTC
hope he is back home soon wanting lots of cuddles and kisses after his ordeal..

Maybe you will need to change his food poor soul, having to go through this , I have a girl who at 4 yrs is a complete angel but still occasionally will pinch something quietly from the coffee table ie my glasses or a pen and sneak off for a chew then when I find her she looks at me in shock as if someone had sneaked it under her paw...LOL

Thanks for your support, OH got home about 4.30, (he is on local council and they had planning committee that started at 9.30AM!!!!! ) so felt lot better with someone to talk to.

Yet another update.............Vet on phone about 5.45, he is ok and waking up. they used endoscope to check stomach, it showed a bit of inflamed area either from irritation of something gone thru or viral bug he had picked up, then they checked all sm & lg intestine, no signs of anything. they are keeping him slightly sedated and on a drip over night to make sure he is hydrated and as long as he pees ok and eats something in morning I can ring about 11am and sort to pick him up. :-) :-)

I mentioned the insurance and vet said removal took all of about 3-4 mins and 2 ligatures and all the rest GA, surgery etc was essential to investigate problem.so they may be picky but only about a couple of quid :-).

to Dogs a babe, who is the Neil Young fan? sorry didn't even know it was name of album....... 1st Gsd was Zigi, next was Zan and this ones sire is called Zasco so he HAD to be a Z????. did think of Zeno but they envisaged shouting 'No Zeno No' and rapidly changed mind.

anyway I feel bit happier than I did this am.

Glad to hear he will soon be home minus a testicle... Hope that was all the problems solved. When ours was operated on the vet v.kindly re wrote some of the bill so i claimed most of the money back but had the testicle removal bit on another bill. (He had OCD) and was "done" as well all in all we paid about £150 and claimed nearly £1800.

Hi all from Happy Chris, :-) :-)
got me boy back home, collected him about 5pm, along with 2 lots of tablets, liquid bio stuff and 6 needles of pain-killer, she said are you ok injecting him? Yes I said but I'll get daughter to do first one while I watch, Its sub-cutaneous and not critical to get right place!!! also 3 tins of waltham food to get him started eating properly.

I am so pleased to have him home even if he is a bit subdued and edgy at present.
Thank Dog I got insurance (1st dog I have done so) as premium was £146 and this lot is guaranteed to be more than that.
- By Noora Date 19.12.08 21:54 UTC
So glad your baby is home :).
I know what you mean about having insurance!
We had paid £52( 2 months payments) for Sasha's insurance and it has so far paid out nearly £5000 for her accident...
Not looking forward see to what the premiums will be after this though as £26 per month was very good!
- By mikav [gb] Date 21.12.08 19:44 UTC
my god this sounds like what my husky bitch is in vets about @ present, went in weds am as not eaten since tuesday am, had vomited monday/ tuesday too, shes had x-rays  done , been on a drip since weds am too. Each time they x-ray her which is being done daily they see a large build up of gas in her colon . she is weeing & seems ok in herself but refuses to eat & this result  result from all the  excessive gas inside her. so not eaten for 5 days now & on drip still  !! vets  gave her some pebbley things to see if they moved into her colon but when they x-rayed her again they were in her intestines so no luck with them. Tomorrow if no change in her condition she will have to be opened up as they need to find a cause of this excessive gas as its getting them worried now. fingers crossed she will be ok & tomorrow shows an improvement of some kind or will have to have a big op.
- By HuskyGal Date 21.12.08 23:07 UTC
Oh Mikav, what a worry..all paws crossed here for some good news.Best wishes for your girl x

Chris, Hows Zuma doing? Glad he's home x
- By tatty-ead [gb] Date 22.12.08 19:50 UTC
Mikav, I do hope your girl was better by today or if she did have to have an op :-( that everything went ok and they have sussed the problem.

HuskyGal, re Zuma
thanks for asking, he went up to the vets this evening for a check up and we saw the one that did his op.
apparently she could feel some 'small bits' in his intestine but they were so small they would come rest of way out on their own especially with the risk of infection in cutting gut, they were almost certainly the cause of him not eating by causing scrapes and sore patches on the way down.
He is now starting to feel better - ie - mum Im bored, mum what can I do, mum can I tear round the field off lead mum, mum Im bored. etc. Had to go and buy 'babyfood' (puppy kibble) for him as poor little 17mth GSD thought grown-up kibble was to big cause he is poorly still :-)
No external stitches to come out and (hopefully) no need to go back. plus vet was impressed as he knows 'lie flat' onto his side to see his belly.

mishka has stomach ulcers vet says , he found thios out when he put an endoscope down her throat & into her stomach, no wander she was poorly & refused food for 6 days, she is home now & thank god didn't have an op. Ate some chicken &  had a little water too. On liquid zantac & lots of pills.  thanx for asking about her folks.
- By HuskyGal Date 22.12.08 23:49 UTC
Oh Mikav,

Best wishes, (do you mind me asking, do you know the cause? Its jsut I have an interest in this GA's in Working sled dogs I have friends who have experienced this and at the time we worked together researching... have some good info/links somewhere around here if you need/would like?) <- ignore me if its all in hand!
HTH :)
- By mikav [gb] Date 23.12.08 07:50 UTC
No sorry don't know the cause but vet did take a biopsy of the ulcer & maybe  have a cause then, i hear stress, bacteria etc can cause them but she has a very calm lifestyle ?? when i find out i will let you know huskygal
