When my pal moves in at the start of summer, she'll be bringing her two rabbits with her.  We'll need to set up a secure home for them in the garden - there's simply no room indoors, and I'm not willing to leave them in the house, even secure in hutches, with proven rabbit killers

So I'm trying to come up with a design, and I got thinking; I'd like to get some birds, as I used to keep quails and finches and miss having them!  Would it be at all possible to keep the rabbits in a well-designed aviary-come-animal pen withe the birds, or is it not feasible - or not safe?  The quails, incidentally, would be the big japanese type, not the piddly little chinese painted ones.  I'd also design a sort of feeding house for the quails, so they could go in through a small hole that the buns couldn't fit through, that way the rabbits would only get their own food.

And while I'm asking a rabbity question - the rabbits at the moment live separately, and my friend has tried to keep them together before but has given up as the buck tries to hump the doe and she gets annoyed with him.  Both neutered, and by now they'll be about 2 years old, maybe a little more.  Their usual home is a 4' x 2' hutch, no run, but they come out once a day - not many toys in there though.  Could it just be frustration, is there a chance they could live together once they're in a much bigger area?

hi nikita
I had two rabbits that were kept in a twenty foot aviary with a concrete sleeping house. They were very happy living like this and could burrow outside as it was an earth floor but had to sink the wire quite deep to stop them burrowing underneath. The buck was entire when I got him but kept spraying and humping my little dog who was not impressed as he wanted to hump the rabbit so they took turns. Had him castrated and got him a lady friend as he looked lonely and the dog was fed up. The doe was about a year old and the buck was two when I put them together. The vet had said that even with a doe they may fight as rabbits are territorial but they got on fine together. Your rabbits may get on in a bigger space you would just have to watch for any fighting and if it gets too bad they will have to be separated. I would be careful if you have birds in with them especially quails which spend all of their time on the floor as rabbits can be spiteful and territorial. My aviary didnt have any birds in so dont know how they would have got if there were. Maybe you can have a separate area for the bunnies.

hi, i've also kept rabbits in the bottom of my avairy, but i had cockatiels budgies, canarys and they where fine but i wouldn't recommend quail, the birds tended to stay in the top the rabbits in the bottom, i also placed lots of logs and things for them to jump on, rabbits as you probably know like shelves and hidy holes.  i would think that the pair would be fine together in a larger area, maybe place them in sectioned off areas so they can see eachother for a while, i guess its worth a try? i have had a castrated male with three girls and he loved it, got bossed about though, good luck
