Topic Dog Boards / General / Dogs nearly set kitchen alight.

Hi

A few days ago I was sat in the lounge watching TV and most of the dogs were in the lounge with me. 2 of the monsters however had been put in the kitchen behind the baby gate as they were being a pain.
Anyway my oldest labrador who is 9 was in the lounge and is normally settled and quiet but she suddenly sat bolt upright and started to bark over and over and then started clawing at the door. As this was not normal I opened the door to see where she wanted to go and was greeted by smoke!!!
The naughty ones in the kitchen had jumped up and knocked 3 rings of the hob on. This wouldn't have been such a problem if I hadn't left a washing basket full of washing on the top. The washing basket has a massive hole in it and the clothes that were on the bottom are singed (sp).

Thank god for Beth if she hadn't reacted I don't think we would now have a kitchen!!!

Anyway I'm sure there must be something like a hob guard to protect against this with children................or are they safer than bloody dogs.
If there is such a thing what are they called and where am I likely to get one? I would say it won't happen again but the 2 labs in question are very naughty.

I would think they do such a thing and my guess is that mothercare might have them - they do cupboard locks and fridge ones (I know have had to use them:rolleyes:)  Good luck in your quest

The knobs for our hob are down the right hand side but will definately go and have a look at this one in Mothercare because it might stop them being able to get to the knobs anyhow.

I wouldn't even have thought of Mothercare............................don't have kids................whereas if I need a dog product I normally know where to go!!!

I buy most of my baby products on ebay as they are half the price of mothercare and there is alwways a wide range

Can't you leave the cooker switched off at the main switch (if electric)? I always leave mine switched off at this switch just in case my lot twist the knobs on while counter surfing. Of course then I forget to switch it on and wonder why things aren't cooking  :D

I came home to a house stinking of gas quite a few years ago.  The dogs had been checking out the cooker and had turned the gas on.  I remembered not to turn on any light switches and hurridly opened all the doors and windows.  What a fright!  Luckily I don't have to keep the dogs in the kitchen nowadays, but we also have bottled gas so we always turn it off after cooking.

Snap Ridgielover,
I had a GSD before my 2 now and she was usually a very good girl!! it was over christmas I had left the turkey on hob of cooker to cool down for picking off the bone later. She knew it was there and didn't touch it. Anyway picked turkey off the bone and put in the fridge, got rid of the rest. After being in bed for several hours, wondered why Hettie was being very unsettled, racing up and down stairs etc when she would normally be asleep. wasn't till she started to nudge me hard with her nose I thought that something must have been up. As i started to go downstairs i could tell what the problem was, all I could smell was gas!! God only knows how long it had been on for, but it took several hours to clear with doors and windows open wide and us freezing to death!!
Hasten to add that is the first and the last time that she ever jumped up at the cooker/work surface.....

One of my mum's dogs did the same thing too at my home, she did a daredevil jump from chair to breakfast bar to kitchen counters, hob, to chicken, and turned my gas knob on, we had no fire just gas.  I just move the chair when she is here to avoid another attempt, but your labs will be able to reach again, so yes if you can get something that is great.

Beth is certainly a heroine, make sure she gets a nice big treat for that! :-D

Beth is a dog in a million.

Two years ago I fell, hit my head and developed epilepsy. Beth knows when I am going to have a fit and this gives me time to get in a safe place.

She truly is the best.

Wow, what a lucky escape! Luckily mine only lick the grill cover when it's open, and haven't ever jumped up that high! They do like to switch the audible alert on the tumble dryer though, that always gives me a shock when it starts buzzing after its cycle!!

Well done that dog! But don't forget to fit smoke alarms just in case! :)

Our Gordon did this with our gas hob a couple of times before we realised it was her, switched on gas, no flame, but fortunately our back door is always open during the day so the gas could escape. We put a big tupperware box over the knobs so she can't knock them on. It was the easiest solution and we haven't had a problem since.
