Topic Dog Boards / General / Barney has Cushing's Disease

We have just found out tonight that our eleven-year old little Bichon/Westie cross has Cushing's Disease.

Without treatment, he is not likely to live much beyond two more years.  There is a medical treatment, Veteryl, which can extend  life beyond that, but it is likely to be prohibitively expensive.  I also fear that all it will do is extend his life into an age where other problems will diminish his quality of life anyway.

If anyone has experience of living with a dog with Cushing's Disease, I'd very much appreciate any advice, tips or guidance they could offer me.  This is very much unchartered territory for us.

Many thanks

I dont personally but I trim a client's dog who has it. They have a drug that they give and they told me the vet believe the dog to lead a long life.

Have you done much internet research on it?

Very sorry to hear about Barney.

Purely from a cost point of view (as I'm afraid I know nothing about the illness), I just wanted to say take a look at Vetoryl on this website http://www.petdrugsonline.co.uk/ which I recently found for a neighbour of my parents whose dog has Cushing's.  She was being charged around £14 more a month by her vet than this company would supply for.

Have also checked out this site and others.  The vet was quoting about £45 for 30 caps, one a day dose.
Have joined the Cushing's Disease forum in order to educate ourselves as much as we can.
Meanwhile he must have more tests tomorrow and get further stressed.  I just wish there was more we could do.
