Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Stupid Panacur (& stupid me!)
- By Harmony Date 09.07.06 22:47 UTC
For fear of making myself look & sound really, really stupid, here goes nothing!

My puppies are now 5 weeks old & due for their 2nd worming.  After having problems with Drontal Puppy with my last litter I thought I'd use Panacur this time.  They had their first treatment at 3 weeks.  Nothing abnormal to report, they were a bit smelly for a day or two but no squity bums.

Anyway, tonight I thought I had better do them again.  According to the instructions it say's; 0.5ml per 1kg bodyweight.  My pups average out at 2.5kg so you'd think 1.25ml.  Me being the stupidist person gave them an average of 2.5ml & it was only as I went to do the last puppy that I realised :(

As soon as I had realised I phoned the Vet straight up who was very good & calm & said that it was nothing to worry about & they should be ok but obviously if there is any problems then to take them in for a check up.

I've just been on to the Intervet website which also say's 0.5ml per 1kg bodyweight but then doseage as below;

Practical dosage recommendations:

Up to 1 kg  -  0.5 ml daily for 3 days              1 to 2 kg  -  1 ml daily for 3 days

2 to 4 kg  -  2 ml daily for 3 days                   4 to 6 kg  -  3 ml daily for 3 days

etc.................

Now am I really that stupid or am I missing something?  According to the above, I've maybe only given upto 0.5ml too much, which yes is bad enough but just doesn't make sense   I've emailed Intervet asking for their advice but would welcome any from here as well please.

Has anyone else done this?  If you prefer to PM me then I will keep anything in the strictest confidence.

As this is normally a 3 day regime, the Vet recommended I don't do the other 2 doses, just worm again at 7 weeks.

I've slapped my own wrists & the puppies have loved the extra cuddles from their stupid Mummy

Lesson for the day; don't do important things when you're poorly & full of tablets

I weigh each pup individually and dose a pup that say weighs 2 1/2 kg only 1ml and wouldn't do 1.5ml until it was 3kg or over.

I have had very squitty pups in the past when I have wormed them especially if I wormed 3 times as now suggested, so I do them at 3 and 7 weeks, but I do worm the bitch in whelp so the resulting pups should have minimal worm burdens, which is why I suspect they had reactions in the past.

Never had a problem with first two litters whose Mums were wormed and I wormed at 3 weeks and before they went, but had terrible problems when I did the 3, 5, and 8 week regime, (the problems were with the 5 week worming, and to lesser extent the 8 week).  so from fourth litter with same Mum and same number of pups went back to 3 and 7 weeks, and have had no problems ever since (another 6 litters).

A friend nearly lost some of a litter they were so bad, and she now does the same as me with no problems.

Thanks :)

All the puppies were individually weighed & I thought, dosed accordingly but obviously they weren't :(

Anyway, good news so far :)  Puppies are their normal happy, bouncy selves & upto mischief :D  I've so far not had any runny poo's or squits.

Intervet phoned me at 9am this morning, asked me breed, how much they actually weighed & how much I'd actually given.  The lady said that they should be ok but that they may get a bit of tummy ache & maybe a bit squitty.  She did say she would log the incident so that if there is any further problems it is already recorded.  The lady also said that if I wanted I could do them again in a week but I said that I'll leave them now until they're 7 weeks.

Thanks again everyone, I still can't believe what a stupid mistake I made

Just to add, their Mum was treated from day 42 until 2 days post whelp with Panacur without any problems & they certainly don't appear to be wormy puppies.

I've heard that Panacur is a very safe wormer, becauses doses much higher than the recommended dose can be given (by accident) without serious side effects.  So hopefully you'll be ok!

Im sure they will be ok. I think the worming instructions are quite involved, and to be honest I find it a bit scary too. When I worm I make my mum sit with me and double check all the doses just in case I get it wrong. I also weigh them individually, try not to worry too much.

Thanks 123 :)  The lady from Intervet told me that in tests they go upto 40 times the recommended doseage without any problems!  Apart from the last pup I did, the others received upto a max 0.5ml more than they should have.  So far eveything is ok so fingers crossed it will remain that way.

I trust my vet implicitly and had long discussions about Panacur liquid prior to even having my bitch mated.  He is a specialist small animal vet, and I do have great faith in him. Because I can't remember the figures, I won't try to quote them.  But I do remember him discussing tests on Panacur and the overdose rates that cause no problems were extremely high.  I know that he was emphatic that it was safe.  I wormed my bitch during pregnancy at the recommended times.  The pups were wormed at 14 days for 3 days as recommended, and again at 5 weeks.  They aren't 8 weeks yet, so I can only comment on what has happened so far.  I have had no signs of worms, and no upset puppies.  This is a toy litter, so if problems were going to be seen I would have expected it in the smallest pup which weighed 400gms at 5 weeks.  I understand that pups can be squidgy if full of worms, but as Mum had been done, I haven't had a problem.
