How does the quarantine laws work with regard to showing dogs.  Watching Crufts yesterday I wondered how the foreign dogs get around the quarantine laws.  OH thinks they have special licence but he is guessing.

I think that they all have pet passports - which is why there are now so many more foreign dogs at Crufts :)

Aha.  I have heard of pet passports but I thought they were British for British dogs.

I'm not very knowledgeable about them - but think that they were initially brought in for some EU countries and then extended to some others, like the US. HELP - someone else must know :D

I'm in the process of getting a pet passport for one of my dogs, so here's what i know.  1. Dog has to be microchipped. 2. Dog has to get a rabies vaccination. 3.One month later dog gets a 2nd rabies vaccination. 4. A month after that, the dog has to be bloodtested. If the dog doesn't have the required amount of rabies antibodies, they get vaccinated again. If the bloodtest is ok(sufficient amount of antibodies)you can get your pet passport.
You can then take your pet to another country.
What they didn't tell me is that i can take my dog out of the country straight away , but my dog cannot re-enter the country until i have the petpassport for 6 months. I'm in Ieland but i'm pretty sure that it's the same in the UK.
So if anyone is thinking of getting a pet passport, apply well in advance of when you need it.

They're not universal, but dogs from many countries can come in under the Pet Passport scheme. :) The list of countries it applies to can be found here.
