Topic Other Boards / Foo / Swollen broken leg (human)

Mum fell over and craked bone in her foot 6 weeks ago. she was in plaster up till Wednesday where it was taken off and she was signed off completely.
BUT she is worried. her leg is about twice the size of her other leg. she has rang the duty doctor and I am going to take her to the 'local' fracture clinic(15 miles away) this afternoon to get it checked out. My Aunty is worried it is thrombosis.
Has anyone come across this before?????
My kids have only broke their arms which are non weight baring limbs, so its different.
Any ideas anyone.
Lea :)

Don't worry too much.  Wait to see what the clinic says.  If it is something like thrombosis they can often give drugs to clear that up if it is mild.  My mum had thrombosis many years ago after she had varicose veins stripped (not nice so won't go into details) but this left her with thrombosis and flebitis (sp?), in her leg. She was treated and it cleared up and she is still running up and down stairs at work when she should have retired years ago :)

Wait to see what it is before you start worrying ;)

I fractured my knee a couple years ago and my leg swelled up double too, i had a frame from ankle to hip on it for 3 months it took that long to heal and and a good 6 months after to get back to normal.

Hi

It is hard to say from this information wether or not she may have a thrombosis or not, but you are doing the right thing by going to the Fracture clinic. They will be able to take a type of X-ray that will show up any thrombi, should they suspect this. As someone else has said it is not neccesarily serious and thrombi can clear up by themselves it just depends on thier location, but it is always best to get them checked out. They can give you drugs to help break them down should they feel this necessary.

Good luck, I hope everything goes well, let us know how you get on.

You are right to onsider the possibility of thrombosis, as the leg has been immobilised for some time...I hope things went well today.

Hi Lea,

Alex says I bet your dad worried he might have to cook his own dinner :-D and weight on her hand and foot :-D.

We hope she feels better soon.

Briony :-)

We went to the hospital, she saw the GP there at 2pm and he referred her to the critical admissions unit where she had to wait and see the orthopedic registra as he thought she might have DVT, the registra was very inconsiderate and was doing a hip operation at the time so we had to wait 2 hours to see him ;)
Took kids to dad and went back armed with sandwich and coke for both of us. Meanwhile mum had all the paper work done just in case she had to be admitted which was looking likely.
On comes a junior doctor who said the likly hood of DVT was very slim and she still wanted the registra to look at it. 5pm in comes regiatra, still in operationg scrubs bless him, has a look and said it is just general swelling due to the fracture and just keep an eye on it but everything is fine and we can go home.
3/4 hour later we actually leave the hospital after finding a nurse as the dostor hadnt given her the forms to say mum had been discharged!!!!! Back home to a chinese takeaway lol
Eventually got home at 7.30. Was 4 1/2 hours after i thought I would LOL
Thankyou for all the advice and support. Am so glad it was all for nothing :)
Lea :)
(Just remind Alex of that if he ever moans about you feeling ill ;) ;) LOL)

So glad to hear that it is nothing more than the after-effects of the fracture - bad enough, I know, but not life-threateneing!

Let's hope you and Mum have a nice, stress-free day today:D

Glad to hear everything is ok.  These things usually turn out to be nothing serious but it is always a worry and always good to get them checked out.  I bet you were relieved.
