They are becoming increasingly weak :(

Although she is bright and alert (currently on the floor fighting with the two youngsters :) ) she finds it sometimes difficult to find the strength to keep her back end up.Once she is up then she is fine albeit a bit wobbly.

We haven't got her on any medication as such and wondered if there is anything that we can now give her to help ? She was on Visorbin but it didn't agree with her tum re collitis so have stopped giving that to her.

I have a feeling we are going to have to start to prepare for 'the day' but just wanted to see if there is anything else that we might have missed ?

Thanks

Lucy

Oh no Lucy :(

I think you've tried everything that we tried - we did have some help from a friend who is a healer - can't say it would work for everyone, but Purdey was always better for her "treatments" - gave us the last six months, I believe.

We're going away for the week shortly - but I'll be thinking of you {{{{hugs}}}}

Bless you Lucy.  So sorry to hear that.  :-(

Is it arthritis or a neurological problem that your dogs has?
- By LJS Date 04.07.05 09:12 UTC
Neurological. She has never really suffered at all with joints, not bad for 14 3/4 really.

We have just got to really keep an eye on her now and decide when she has had enough. She is really struggling to get out the door to poo in time as her colitis takes over poor girl.

We are so grateful we have had so long with her as about five years ago she was so poorly with her colitis we were very close to saying she shouldn't suffer anymore but she turned around and put on weight and stabilised :)

Oh gosh I suppose we need to start preparing, something I have been dreading :D :D

Those were supposed to be :( :(

Bless her.  14 is a good age.

The only thing I've found to help with neurological dysfunction is swimming.  My friend has a few CDRM cases which swimming has helped to improve muscle tone and hind leg function.  It doesn't stop the disease, just improves clinical symptoms so the dog can have a reasonable good quality of life for longer.  1 dog that was a quadriplegic due to disc compression was able to walk after a few weeks swimming sessions.

I've known of some people to cart them when they have neurological problems, providing they are not in any pain, are in otherwise good health, bright and alert and have still got bladder function.  Some dogs take very well to carts, others find it hard to adapt.

It's a difficult call to make and only you know best how to gauge your dog.

God bless you.

We don't have a hyrotherapy pool near us unfortunately otherwise I would have considered that.

I think she has had a good, happy life with us, we have just got to make the choice when she tells us she has had enough. Once she looses her dignity or she is in any pain then we will know.
