my great dane has just been operated on for a condition called cherry eye on both of his eyes.

his ees looked so much better when he came out . untill three days later when his lympth gland started to come up.  we took him back to the vets who  gave us steriod drops and tucked the gland back in and told us to go back in 7 days
hes due to go back tommorow and is no better so unfourtenetly he going to be facing another operation

Hi sorry but you need to find a vet that will take them out we have this done with the bulldogs and corsos it is some thing that happens in all breeds of dogs, some more than others  my vet does while i wait 24 hours later my dog is fine yes there is a chance of dry eye in later life
but that is a chance i am will ing to take and so far all has been okay.

My bitch (boston terrier) had cherry eye and we did an op on her and it has never popped up. Her eye's look beautiful...There are 3 different ops I believe that can be done....Some dogs it just does not take.

It was talked about on here awhile back if you do a search you will come up with alot of info
check this site out

well  took my baby to the vets and the vets wants to see him in three weeks to be operated on.

she gave me three options....1 is to leave and see how it goes
2. to continue with the drops
3. to operate on.

it looks horrible having his gland showing it looks awful.

Hi

I don't want to worry you, but my vet was "concerned" about Will's eye - his third eyelid covers a small portion of his eye in the corner, and is also pink and black which makes it show more. My vet was insistant he wanted to operate but I wouldn't let him, and I expressely made it clear when Willis went to be hip scored that he was not to have the eye done if he had an GA. His eye is still fine, and hasn't gotten any worse at all...so I will be leaving it at that

I had to get T-Bone's cherry eye fixed because it was causing an ulcer on the lens of her eye and she could of went blind...We had drops to put into her eye for about 2 weeks before the op....My vet isn't keen on removing the third eyegland because of dry eye....

Good luck with what you chose :)

Hi, have discussed this a lot with my vet.  She used to offer either stitch down or removal, but last year went to a seminar and a specialist told them that the stitch down only has a 30% chance of working, each time, the pattern being, if it doesnt work first time, do it again, if it pos again 2nd time, then remove.  He advised no longer offering the stitch down - to much chance of too many GAs.  So now sheonly does (and does them wonderfully well) removals again, like a few years ago.  So far, we have never had a dry eye resulting.  I know ther is a new "pouching" op abailable in the USA but dont know if anyone is doing it in UK yet
bye
Gwen
