Sadly, yes they can have a huge reaction to the hormones, becoming broody, making nests, producing milk etc. If you are certain she isn't pregnant, tell the vet what's happening and offer her services as a foster mother. Otherwise give her raspberry leaf tablets, cut down her protein, take her for lots of long walks and generally jolly her along. Remove any soft toys she may have, and be aware that she may become attractive to other dogs.

It's a miserable time for her, so don't get cross, but don't let her wallow in it either.

Hi
Are you sure your dog isn't pregnant, is there any other signs apart from nesting. I was told by my vet that my Staffie wasn't pregnant after he scanned her at 4 weeks, even though there was signs, so I thought it must be a phantom. then she was x-rayed at 7 weeks, still nothing, by then she had put on weight, had swollen mammory glands, been off her food for about 3 days then eating like there was no tomorrow, and doing other strange things, and my vet still had me believing it was a phantom. I'd read in books that the bitch could go through all the symptoms of a real pregnancy right up to labour and trying to give birth, so when the vet said there was nothing there I had to believe him. I took her back when she was 8 weeks and he had a feel around and eventually said he could detect a pregnancy, but he thought it was singular and to bring her back on her due date so he could x-ray her as she would need a caesarean. So I took her back on her 63rd day and he found 5 to 6 pups, which she had perfectly normal on day 65.
