Hi everyone
My sister-in-law is writing a book about insomnia. I was wondering if anyone has suffered from this complaint and whether they have cured it and if they have how?

Can I read it when I'm lying awake at night, unable to sleep??
Cheers,
Lorna :) :)

Easily cured. Give everything the postie delivers in a brown envelope to a litter of five week old pups to play with. Reason for insomnia - gone
Seriously though, wish her luck with the book

I cured it the other night by renting the film called 'Insomnia' with Robin Williams...... don't bother :(
Good luck with the book :)

I can only tell you what was told to me by a very ancient family doctor , many moons ago ..he said:

Take plenty of excercise in the fresh air

Have a definite routine just before bed and make sure you stick to it every night (this includes ..letting dog out , calling them in , tidying kitchen , locking the doors , using bathroom , lying down and reading THEN lying down - lights off ready for sleep)

Have a warm milky drink before bedtime

No tea of coffee after 6pm

Eat your evening meal early

I stuck to it and , after having had insomnia for quite a while it took about 7 nights for the body clock to twig what was going on ...and now I sleep well

Well I don't suffer from insomnia as such, but I do struggle sometimes when I switch from night shifts back to days :(
The body clock tends to be thrown and it gives a bit of an insight into how insomniacs must feel. I would absolutely hate to be like that all the time.
You have my sympathies!

Hi Ace

Try an ancient herbal remedy - Valerian. You can buy preparations from Boots, called (I think) Valerina. I use the day-time one, for stress - it works a treat.

Hey there Carol,
I had trouble sleeping for many years. The cause was the wifes 'SNORING'.
But all is well now. The cure was quite simple, I placed a pillow over her head and the harder I pressed the fainter the snores, after only ten minutes the snoring stopped completely.
I am now fully rested and have no trouble at all of getting to sleep at night.
(I 'am' a bit worried about why the wife has not woken-up for the last six months, maybe she just need more sleep than me)
 :D

When I couldn't sleep years ago I was told to do this and it worked for me. Once you have followed your routine-milky drink etc and are settled down in bed wanting to sleep: lie on your back with no limbs touching each other and starting with your toes, clench them up tight, count to five slowly and then relax them completely, then clench your whole foot- relax, and work your way up your body trying to clench each different muscle for the slow count of 5 and relax for 5. I never remember getting more than half way.
Another trick I used to use was to imagine I was in an idyllic place, completely happy and relaxed - for me it was lying in the sun where i could hear running water and the sun beating down , birds singing etc . Some people can also sort of hypnotise themselves, by saying to yourself - I am going to sleep soon and wont wake up unitl 7 am or whatever, but you have to believe it!!!
Now that you all think I have lost my marbles completely, I shall go and make another cuppa - says she who wakes every morning at 5.30 ish and can do nothing about it- but at least I can get to sleep now, trouble is its at about 9.30 every night on the sofa!!!

Hi W/lover,
Those tips of yours are good, tried and tested ones! I taught them to my son when he was little (scared to get back to sleep after a nightmare etc) and they worked a charm. :)
