Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Galastop (cabergoline) to bring butch into season
- By vivaladiva [gb] Date 30.05.20 19:50 UTC
My large breed bitch is just over 2yrs and never had a season. After speaking to my own vet (bitch had full check up and bloods done all good) as I was worried they put me in touch with a reproductive vet. They want me to use galastop (cabergoline) to bring her into season then mate her when she does. My questions are:
Has anyone done this.
If so did they get pups and if so how many.
I don't want to do anything to harm my bitch.

Has she had her Oestrogen levels checked ? Large breeds frequently don't become sexually mature until 18 months to 2 years or later.

If you are very concerned possibly an ultrasound of her womb & ovaries.

Hi. Yes and a full blood panelall come back normal and is nice and healthy so cant see a reason why she hasnt come into season

They have checked ALL horomone levels ? Not just Oestrogen, but testosterone & other related horomones ?

What were her Prolactin, Oestrogen & Testosterone levels ?

All I  remember is normal. She is my 6 gen bitch and none have been like this and I have asked about females from the sire line have all been in by 12 mth. I trust my vet and also the repo vet (they breed and show there own dogs)

I cannot understand why a drug that suppresses the production of Prolactin would stimulate production of the Oestrogen & bring a bitch into Estrus Pity your vet didnt give you the full levels of horomones

That is why I asked the question on here to see if anyone else had used it. As all I can find on the internet about is it stops laction and pytoms. There are many drugs where human or animal that are meant for one thing but can be used for otherthings. My own vet had never used galostop before for this but had used others it was the repo vet that said to use galostop as there had been good results with it. Even if I did have blood work report they are normal and normal is normal.

I would really recommend you join the Avidog monthly breeder membership as there are several members of that group who have used cabergoline and other meds to bring their bitches into season and can give you first hand accounts of what they did and the results.

The monthly membership is about $45 and you can cancel anytime, so paying $45 to get advice from other experienced breeders and from Dr Gayle Watkins would be a great idea.  It's this membership and it's access to the FB group you want to get so you can get that info:  https://www.avidog.com/shop/dog-breeder-memberships/avidog-breeder-college-membership-monthly/

I've used it to bring a bitch into 3rd season after a 16 months gap. We gave 30 days of galastop and she came in 2 weeks after finishing the medication so not sure if It was direct response.

Her season was ovulatory both in behaviour and progesterone levels. We did chilled ai from a foreign dog but unfortunately she didn't take.
