Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Inducing seasons with Galastop
- By janet taylor [gb] Date 19.07.06 06:48 UTC
Has any one on this board had any experience inducing a bitch's season with Galastop [ Cabergoline]?
If so what was the outcome, how long did it take for the dog to come into season, did she produce produce pups and were there any problems?
Many Thanks
Jan

Good grief I doubt those using it for phantoms would wnat their bitches to be brought in season????

Why would anyone want to change a bitches cycle like this?

I'd be worried about any long term problems this might cause :( I firmly believe in letting take it's course, than bring in a season to (possibly) suit the owners needs.

We had a beardie who went 3 years in between seasons, blood test showed her hormones weren't right & at the direction of our vet her had a course of hormone injections & within five days she came into season & became a spot on 8 monthly bitch afterwards. She also had a healthy litter of 6 puppies that season

I am not saying that I wish to do this, I am asking if anyone has any information regarding Galastop being used to induce a season.
I am aware that it can also be used for stopping lactation which is a totally different question.

Some stuff on pharmacalogical control of reproduction.   My reservation about the use of some thing like this is the tendancy for daughters to inherit their obstectric tendancies from their dams and so it goes on down through the line.

As far as I was aware Galastop is marketed/Licenced for treatment of phantom pregnancy.

If it has a side effect of inducing a season then I have not known anyone that has used t being told this, and hence my concern.

Hello

I have never heard that Galastrop can be used to induce a season.  My best advice is to contact your vet, or a vet that lives locally to you and ask their advice on this product.  I used it once many years ago when my lactacting bitch would not stop producing milk, the vet suggested we use Galastrop.  This did stop her milk production.

I would not be surprised if their was a product that could induce seasons, but I have never really looked into it, so interested to read what happens in this tread.
I have always been told and really do believe that seasons are best left alone.  When we start to mess with the hormones in our dogs body it can be a bad thing.  People I know that put their cats on the pill to stop them calling then can have fertility problems.  The injection that stops unwanted pregnancy's in dogs can also cause problems with fertility in the future.
Good luck in your findings.

I am researching the subject of bitches having normal seasons and have been told by a canine fertility expert [Mrs. Angelika Heimendal] who practises in Cambridge, that not only can Galastop be used for relieving false pregnancies/excessive lactation it has also been used to induce a season in cases where the bitch is not ovulating.[ see methods for induction of Estrus in Dogs Using Gonadotropins, GNRH or Dopamine Agonists by Patrick W Concannon]
If she is given 0.1ml per kilo for 30 days she should then come into season within 4-25 days dependent on where in her cycle she is ie; beginning , middle or end of anestrus.
I wondered if any one had had any experience of doing this and if so what the results were.

Hi Janet
Thats really interesting. I am sure if a fertility expert has told you this that their is every reason it would work, just because noone has heard of it, it must be new.  It will be interesting to hear how it works out, such as does a bitch actually ovulate and how many puppies, I can see why you asked now.  If this was the case and a bitch had problems in ovulating it would be very helpful for future owners.
If you find out anything more on this in the future please post or contact me and let me know as I am always interested in this kind of thing.
Take care

A friend of mine has used it and said he was amazed that it did work and had a large litter to prove it, he bought them from the chemist for under £3.00 for 100 and gave his bitch 10 tablets for 7 days, (he has very large breed of dog) and the bitch came in in 4 days, hope this helps, I also feel it should be left to nature, but each has our own opinion.

Many thanks for your input so far, still don't know what putting a bitch onto the liquid form will do but perhaps I will get more replies later.
I was not aware that you could buy Galastop over the counter as it is supposed to be a persciption only drug, nor was I aware that you could get it in pill form. You learn something new everyday don't you!
I personally agree with you it should be left to nature ,but, some people have dogs that forwhatever reason don't come in or have eratic seasons and they are desperate to keep the blood lines so they do what they can!!
I am only doing some research on this.
.
Again Many Thanks.

Hi
I wouldn't mind knowing what it was that your friend used as you are not able to buy Galastop over the counter [either the liquid or the tablets, these are 30 for £145 per pack] they are both only available on perscription.
Thanks Jan

My vet has suggested only yesterday that I could use Galastop to induce my bitches season. She is way over due but I have decided to leave her & let her come in season in her own time.

From the reports that I have the Galastop seems to be a bit hit and miss. Some bitches will come in as anticipated and some do nothing at all.
Mind you I only have a small number of bitches on file so perhaps this is not representative of the overall picture.
