Topic Dog Boards / Health / plaque off, plaque out, plaque X.... which one??
- By onetwothreefour Date 08.08.18 12:28 UTC
10 years ago there was only Plaque Off.... Now there seem to be about 20 similar products!

Are any better than any others?  Subjectively speaking???  The majority of them seem to have seaweed of some sort in.... or algae...

I have been sold various 'plaque remover' products but sadly NONE has worked!!   So for mine, it's dentals.   I'll be watching the replies to this one.

I have tried using Plaque Off as a preventive in the past, and I was recently tempted to trial Tartar X because I do like some of the other Phytopet products. I found them both useless, and have gone back to giving a weekly brush clean with either Logic of Virbac CET toothpaste.

Well, I did respond to something similar a while ago.

Mine had a slight build up of tartar on the back teeth. Vet said not enough to do a dental and recommend Plaque Off. Got to say it worked. It made the tartar soft so you could just flick it off.

It is a particular kind of seaweed that works on tartar this way. Maybe I have just been lucky as it works a treat for mine. They are raw fed so I believe it helps as they don't get sticky buildup from carbs and they do chew on bones.

Same here.  I wasted too much money on Plaque off and others.  I still prefer a proper dental which gives results.  I spent over £20 on plaque off and might as well have thrown the money down the drain.

For anyone starting on a very young dog, and brushing daily, they could find it's the best way, but most folk won't bother with it daily.

Mine are raw fed including bones so not much of an issue, but I just gave them a scrape with the same sort of dental scraper you use on human teeth. There's only been enough to warrant it once though. They're not mad keen but they're poodles so they have to put up with lots of grooming stuff they're not mad keen on and are patient souls.

Well, I've been using Plaque Out for about 3 weeks now and yesterday I pulled out my dental pick thing and managed to get off a load of white tartar - pretty much all of it.  Still a bit of brown stuff to work on.

I have no idea if this would have been possible without the Plaque Out for 3 weeks, but ho hum.  I was just wondering whether I should replace with the same or try something different....

I’ve had good results with plaque off. Maybe it varies with the dog, used it on a 6, 4 and 3 year old.

Ok, so having thought Plaque Off was the next best think to sliced bread, I now find I’m not quite of the same view any more. I’ve been using it through the summer with good results, then my six year old started rubbing her face and the fur there thinned noticeably and the skin beneath was red and sore. As it’s been hot I assumed it was above average moulting because of the heat, but as it got cooler, nothing changed and she started to look patchy. So, anyway, off to the vets we went, treated for demodex, no change. Tried a special shampoo three times a week in case it was fungal, no change. So.... this week she’s had blood tests and skin scrapes all of which have been normal. Except for thyroid function. Which brings me to the Plaque off, it’s seaweed based and has an iodine content of 0.08%, the label states it’s not recommended for dogs with thyroid issues. So now I feel that I’m to blame and my poor girl has had a raft of tests she needn’t have had. So did the Plaque Off cause the issue or highlight a minor issue that was lurking beneath? I don’t know yet - waiting for some further results. Fortunately, I stopped using it about a fortnight before we went to the vets, so it should have cleared her system. I thought it worth mentioning in case someone else is experiencing the same.

Yes, due to the seaweed content, all the Plaque off-in-out-X whatever products are high in iodine.  That isn't going to cause a problem in a healthy dog, but if a dog has a thyroid problem already, extra iodine isn't good.  Hence why not to give it to dogs with thyroid issues.

On the other hand, at least you've found out that your dog has a thyroid issue and usually they are pretty easily treated with meds.

I've taken one of my dogs off it because we are planning a litter in a few months and I don't think it's a good idea for that reason.  My older dog is still on it...

We use the Plaque Off, but for my terrier I still have to descale the canines as he gets tartar build up anyway.  The other teeth are OK. The plaque off gets things soft enough that I can scrape it off myself with a dental scaler.
