Topic Dog Boards / General / PUPscan Project?

Interesting ...

What is PUPscan?

"The PUPscan Project is to research and develop the diagnosis and treatment of inherited hip and elbow disorders using Ultrasound. The team will identify the post-natal events that are described as ‘dysplasia’ at skeletal maturity as distinct from inherited disorders by scanning hips in the first 2 months of life. Over the period of the research the PUPscan project will produce breed and gender specific data and measurements that can be used as guidance for puppy care for the future in order to minimise the risk of disability."

I noticed a litter advertised on this site recently showing as "PUP scanned".  I was intrigued as I had never heard of it.  Found the following link, for what it is worth ...

Very interesting Blay. Thank you for the link

You're welcome.  I, too, thought it was interesting.  I'm no expert, but it does seem that any claims for the effectiveness and value of PUPscanning might wisely be treated with caution - as the Kennel Club comments suggest.

The use of the PennHip assessment from 4 months old has improved hips in the USA.

A lot of breed clubs have been holding seminars with pupscan and I know a number of breeders have had them out to assess their litters too

PUPscam??   Of course breeders should take advantage of anything that helps avoid disasters, but logic suggests, to little old me, this is way too early to be testing puppies, for very much of anything.   Further, is this perhaps bolting the stable door after the horse has gone - ie better to use sound breeding stock BEFORE producing litters?   Bearing in mind what the buying public will think they are buying, or not buying.   They know about HD and ED, but as suggested, somebody is already advertising their puppies as PUP scanned??   What about those puppies who at a very early stage, show 'abnormalities'.    Cull?

Definitely something not to be rushed into, I'd have thought

im sceptical to be honest, the KC and BVA do not endorse it or at least didn't when I looked into it. I don't see it as a viable alternative to normal hip scoring and if I'm going to be hip scoring then why do this one? Has there been any studies on this to see if puppies who had better results with this went on to have better hip scores?

A KC spokesperson, alongside the BVA, told Our Dogs: ‘Following recent publicity surrounding PUPscan, the puppy ultrasound project, which aims to screen for hip dysplasia in 6-8 week old puppies, the Kennel Club (KC) and British Veterinary Association (BVA) would like to clarify their position on methods of screening for hip dysplasia in dogs.
‘Both organisations are supportive of research into novel methods of assessing and treating disease in dogs. However, we believe that such research must always be undertaken according to the highest scientific and welfare standards, that data collection and statistical analysis should be robust, and that the methods, results and conclusions should be rigorously scrutinised by the formal peer-review process.
‘Neither the KC nor BVA are currently aware of any peer-reviewed research demonstrating the ability of ultrasound in young puppies to accurately determine the severity of either laxity or osteoarthritis later in life.
‘Until robust and rigorous research demonstrates the utility of ultrasound in puppies to predict hip dysplasia in mature dogs, the Kennel Club and BVA cannot endorse the PUPscan project as a screening scheme for hip dysplasia nor accept certification from this scheme.
‘We would encourage those who have participated in this research to continue to use the well-established BVA/KC Hip Dysplasia Scheme to screen their dogs for hip dysplasia.

It's so new and in its Infancy and will be interested to hear when breeders have had their litters scanned if they got anything other than excellent and what happened to those pups who weren't and if they were scored. Same for excellent as pups and what the outcome is as an adult.
I'd like to see and be interested in results once comparisons come through. Also if any queries on the scans do breeders tell owners and does this affect insurance and the coverage? I guess it's the same as eye tests and baer tests in pups before they go to the new homes.

We recently had the pupscan project come and scan our litter of puppies and found the whole experience very informative and stress free for the puppies, it will be interesting to see what the data shows

I am finding this interesting and I hope the company maintain absolute transparency with regard to their results, I am rather sceptical at the moment, particularly with ongoing scanning when puppies leave for their pet homes, it would seem to me that it all stands or falls on the majority of scanned puppies being monitored as adults.
