im sceptical to be honest, the KC and BVA do not endorse it or at least didn't when I looked into it. I don't see it as a viable alternative to normal hip scoring and if I'm going to be hip scoring then why do this one? Has there been any studies on this to see if puppies who had better results with this went on to have better hip scores?
A KC spokesperson, alongside the BVA, told Our Dogs: ‘Following recent publicity surrounding PUPscan, the puppy ultrasound project, which aims to screen for hip dysplasia in 6-8 week old puppies, the Kennel Club (KC) and British Veterinary Association (BVA) would like to clarify their position on methods of screening for hip dysplasia in dogs.
‘Both organisations are supportive of research into novel methods of assessing and treating disease in dogs. However, we believe that such research must always be undertaken according to the highest scientific and welfare standards, that data collection and statistical analysis should be robust, and that the methods, results and conclusions should be rigorously scrutinised by the formal peer-review process.
‘Neither the KC nor BVA are currently aware of any peer-reviewed research demonstrating the ability of ultrasound in young puppies to accurately determine the severity of either laxity or osteoarthritis later in life.
‘Until robust and rigorous research demonstrates the utility of ultrasound in puppies to predict hip dysplasia in mature dogs, the Kennel Club and BVA cannot endorse the PUPscan project as a screening scheme for hip dysplasia nor accept certification from this scheme.
‘We would encourage those who have participated in this research to continue to use the well-established BVA/KC Hip Dysplasia Scheme to screen their dogs for hip dysplasia.
