Topic Dog Boards / General / Wahl nail grinders

I am finally getting round to buying one of these, but note they come in battery operated, or mains.   Apart from the obvious, which would be 'best'?

Thanks.

I tried both but I tried the most laid back of my dogs, Bearded Collie, first.

As soon as she heard the noise she ran for the hills.

This is why I've not bought one up to now - my Basset is easy about having his nails cut as you'd like, but my Whippet ..... she 'accepts the inevitable' so I am concerned about whether she'd go for any noise a grinder might make.   I'm wondering whether my now-retired groomer round the corner has one I could try - although it would have to be here as she could be as upset about having this done off her property, as the actual grinder.

I use a Dremel on mine with no issues whatsoever, they push each other out of the way to try to get their turn, but that's mainly because they get a little hotdog sausage when it's done.:grin::grin: The noise doesn't bother them in the slightest and I find it much easier to use a grinder as you can't really quick them like you can with clippers so no accidents/bleeding. Mine is quite old and it's mains, I would probably try the cordless one when it needs replacing.

I've been spending time accustoming (counter conditioning)  my 2 to the noise of a grinder. I got it cheap and haven't yet managed to use on their nails (I'm terrified of hurting them, wimp that I am) As I'm on my own I'd definitely go for a cordless as it's less to worry about; there's enough with  nails, loose fur, keeping them still and safe... I'm also trying to work on training them to use a scratch board but it's all very slow work as I've a lot going on.
I believe mini/micro? Cordless Dremel are most recommended
If you can borrow one for cc-ing that's perfect

Neither of the wahl ones, I found they were not powerful enough, almost stopping when a nail touches it. I'd get a proper dremel, it'll last for years and years

Many thanks for the replies.   Checking, I think the mini-Dremel is a touch pricey for my budget, given I only have 2 hounds now.  It might have been relevant with our previous mini-pack!   Or if I was working as a groomer (or working, period!).

Hum Chaumsong - back to the drawingboard then!!

Maybe you could try ebay, someone may well sell one at a cheaper price.
I would also highly recommend a Dremel. I bought one around 7 years ago(forgotten exactly now) & it was around £70(also cant remember exact price), which does seem quite a bit but easy maths say £10 a year & in that time, the max dogs have been 8, so I think I have had my monies worth in that time

I agree with chaumsong. I bought the mains one after buying a cheap dremel on ebay thinking it would be better. My dog runs off if he sees wahl one. Its very noisy and snatches at the nails. I actually bought one that's used to file down acrylic nails. Its smaller than the wahl and most dremels which I find easier and with variable speed.

Me again.  I've been doing some more searching but can't find a second-hand one on either Ebay or Amazon.   I did find the one above which mentioned Dremel but I'm assuming it's really a 'Dremel-type' .... from China.    Most Dremels on Ebay come from America so add the postage (!!).  Also many on Amazon are clearly for uses other than pet nails!!?

Back to the clippers!!

No, that isn't a Dremel. I done a little search...this is not quite the same as mine but similar  & looks a good package to me http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Dremel-395-Multi-Tool-5-Speed-10-000-37-000-rpm-125-watt-240v-/172915830235?hash=item2842962ddb:g:wx4AAOSwCi9Z22vJ

Thanks - I wonder why I didn't find these (there's another used one which looks ok too).

Glad to help....

The Dremel I bought from Ebay arrived just now.   I have to say although it does work (Teazel eyed me very suspiciously from her perch on the sofa when I switched it on to see if it works) it's FILTHY.   I suppose looking at it and then at the photos on Ebay again, you can see it's not pristine but to be honest, I'd never send an item out in that kind of condition to the point the spanner actually shows signs of rust.   It smells 'musty' too so has probably been in some workshop unused for how-long.   I spent a good 15 minutes wiping round the case and tool.     I'm not sure I've made a wise buy, even if it was 'cheap' and you do usually get what you pay for.

It seems rather heavy to use too.

There is no return option with this seller.

Even though they say 'no returns' it means nothing in relation to the 'money back guarantee' regardless of whether they are a private or a buisiness seller.

The listing states 'very little use', if you feel this is wrong you need to open an ebay 'item not as described' case, the seller will have to send you a tracked return label and refund you, if they do not do this voluntarily then ebay will step in and send you a label, refund you from the sellers account and then give them a 'defect' on their selling acct.
All this only applies through an ebay  'not as described' case which you MUST open.

What a shame I'd been looking forward to hearing how you got on with it.
I'd definitely do what Tattyhead suggests.

I have made the overnight decision to let it go.   Not back to the seller on Ebay but I have a couple of possibilities - I may even make it available to anybody here, once I've heard back from my first option.  It would be slightly less than I paid for it + postage.  And it will be CLEAN and the inside (of the case) packed with bubblewrap, not as it came to me with all the bits rattling around!!    And as for 'little use' - that's probably accurate - it still works but clearly in this case, little use means used a couple of times and than stored in garage or workshop for how long.....

I'll keep 'you' updated.

ps   I just don't want to upset my Whippet who I'm now convinced would be better with me continuing with the chippers, to be honest.

I'm sorry for even highlighting this to you now. Ebay can be really good but every now & again it obviously isn't....

PM sent

HI
My first port of call re having this Dremel from me hasn't come back immediately - she says she wants time to consider.   Fair enough.

So I'm throwing this open to first come, first served basis.   I'd be happy (more than ) to accept £20 + postage for it.   I have cleaned it up and you can see it on the link posted on this thread already.

If anybody is interested, please PM me.

Thanks.
