AKC -registration "The American Kennel Club registration system can be described as a cycle, which is repeated every generation. A convenient starting point is the registration of a litter. In order for a litter to be eligible for registration, the sire (Father/stud dog) and the dam (Mother/bitch) must be individually AKC registered and the litter must be whelped in the United States. Registration of the litter must be completed before any of the pups from the litter can be individually registered with AKC. "
So unless the parents are ABLE to be registered and Become registered, the puppies cannot get registered.
And just because they are AKC registered does not mean that these are healthy and perfect specimens of the breed standard  Sometimes it affects the price of the dog, other times the breeder is setting the costs to recoup expenses. It's just up to the individual on what to do.
Generations of dogs are bred and sold in the US with AKC papers. Only the breeders have the responsibility of health and conformation. The papers mean nothing except a genealogical record.
IMO and at the risk of starting a war  AKC registration affects little these days....if they ever have.... for the average pet owner. AKC has a reputation of being a beauty pageant, not a guarantee of quality. I think its trying to overcome this in the last few years with pressing for better health standards and tests.
Rant over ;) :D
