Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / New Puppy - Where does it sleep?
- By belinda-jayne [gb] Date 22.04.16 18:08 UTC
Hi all
I’m going to be getting a puppy in the near future I  lost my other dog nearly two years ago and wanted to wait a bit before getting a new one.
Doing loads of reading up as thing’s change so I have been getting up to date on all things puppy.  just wanted to know one thing the first night home and for the next few nights do I take puppy up to bed with me  and let him sleep next to the bed. Do I put him in his crate and sleep down stairs in the same room or do I go to bed and put him in his crate. I will be getting a puppy comforter the ones that make the  heart beat sound and I have a heat safe I’m  stuck as to what to do. I do not want to stress him.
thank you all for any help you can give

It's up to you but I think it's better to have pup next tp your bed where you can hear him  and reassure with a touch if needed. This way u can soon take him downstairs if need be during the night.mine eventually sleep by bed anyway so starting like this would be fine

Mine have always been in a crate downstairs and I've gone to bed upstairs. They have always settled quickly, I guess it all depends on the pup but would start downstairs and see how they settle.

I had mine in a crate down stairs and just went to bed. I felt better to start as I ment to go on. When it got close to bed time (which for me was any where from midnight to 2am) I'd make sure things stayed clam no active games to hype her up then just before bed out to the toilet. Never heard her once.

hi all thank you very much for your help
my heart is saying  having him by the bed for the first few nights
but I'm not sure if I will be making a rod for my own back
as he is a breed that should not do stairs and steps
so he will not be sleeping up stairs

If needs be can you sleep on the sofa while he is in a crate? My dogs are all large breeds and like you I didn't want them being used to being upstairs as a puppy.

Ah yes Jo but what you didn't say was that your pup had already been sleeping overnight in her own crate from 6 weeks old lol.
After buying a puppy that wasn't used to a crate and dealing with the subsequent disturbed nights I vowed that all the puppies I bred would be crate trained before they went to their new owners. Yes it sometimes resembled crate city in my front room at night but every new owner of mine has said the same, pups had no problems settling at bedtime.
So in reply to the original post, I think it also depends on the work put into your puppy before you get it. Let's hope your breeder crate trains her litter.

My first two pups started by my bed, then once they were settled, were moved downstairs for the next 2-3 years.  It shouldn't be a problem.  Unless pup is individually crate trained you bring him/her home, then this is going to be absolute change for him - taken away from everything he's ever known and put into a new environment with no family, no siblings to snuggle in to, new person etc.  A few nights with you won't cause any problems and it will help him settle faster.

With my breed, which is one that positively hates being alone, I'd err on the side of having a new puppy up with me in a crate alongside my bed.   Obviously when we were breeding our own litters, that didn't apply - once the majority of the litter went home, those I kept back were moved to a puppy pen we had in the kitchen.   But with the most recent buy-ins, knowing I'd be in for trouble if they weren't in with me (they were a year apart in age, and came at different times), I had them crated in my room with me.  For me, to leave a puppy alone early days, to become perhaps, hysterical alone in a crate, is counter-productive.   A puppy needs to learn to like their crates.   Plus having them with me meant the overnight outing was 'easier' - and rather than let them wake up and react, I'd try to anticipate the need to go out, around 3 am, and wake them!

One thing I'd not do is have a puppy sleeping on my bed - too easy for them to fall off (or even jump off and injure themselves) and/or mess up there!

thank you so much for your help I have had dogs all my life.
but each one is a new life and it has been nearly 13 years since I had a puppy around.
so I really wanted some help I will go with my heart and have him upstairs with me in his crate.
thank you all for helping me.
I will have waited along time for this little chap. well when mummy to be come's into season and if all goes well.
but I'm sure he will be worth the wait I will keep telling myself that when I'm pulling my hair out
I still remember what hard work they are but it is all worth it in the end

I read a lot on this and decided to have my pup in a soft crate by the side of my bed for the first 7 nights, every time he cried I'd pick him up, no talking to him and straight downstairs for the toilet, straight back upstairs after and back in his crate, if he grizzled I'd put my hand down to reassure him and say "quiet".

After 7 nights he went downstairs and I've not had any issues at all with him at night.

Good luck.

thank you for your reply I will be having him by the side of my bed.
just have to work out how as there is the width of a bed side table and his crate.
will no way fit it is not a huge crate but when he is grown he will be able to stand up no problem
and have some room in there as I got it for when my lab was a puppy
I'm sure I will work something out lol

I would use a large cardboard box - tall enough for him not to be able to easily get out of it. With the top being open it means you can just drop your hand into the box to reassure him if needed.

thank you  I had thought of that but not sure how strong it would be
but I guess it does not have to be that strong really not when they are little

For the first few nights I used my large cat carrier! It fitted in the space and had a door and mesh hikes I could let him sniff my fingers if needed comfort in night. Easier to take him outside in night again no play and a hushed word for toilet we used. A praise and then into carrier. We then tried carrier open in kitchen by pet bed with stair gate on. I only went down a few nights to let him out for wee but a radio and chat station settled him

Our breeder had slept for six weeks on sofa by the pups and he had his two siblings still with him when we chose him. So we knew he would be upset if left all alone... his happy now with hall, kitchen to sleep in. We keep a stair gate on stairs for the cats as he would eat their food all the time. One eats his on the landing and they have a free dog space. Given the chance he would sneak up eat cat food and sleep on our bed...btw his not called Goldilocks!

hi saxonjus
he he very funny that. I'm sure he would we are going to give the cardboard box a try.
when we get him it will only be for a few nights and I think I will be able to get one to fit by the side of the bed
and as others have said I can put my hand down to him for comfort when he needs it.
the radio is a great  I will give that one a try
thank you
