With my breed, which is one that positively hates being alone, I'd err on the side of having a new puppy up with me in a crate alongside my bed. Obviously when we were breeding our own litters, that didn't apply - once the majority of the litter went home, those I kept back were moved to a puppy pen we had in the kitchen. But with the most recent buy-ins, knowing I'd be in for trouble if they weren't in with me (they were a year apart in age, and came at different times), I had them crated in my room with me. For me, to leave a puppy alone early days, to become perhaps, hysterical alone in a crate, is counter-productive. A puppy needs to learn to like their crates. Plus having them with me meant the overnight outing was 'easier' - and rather than let them wake up and react, I'd try to anticipate the need to go out, around 3 am, and wake them!
One thing I'd not do is have a puppy sleeping on my bed - too easy for them to fall off (or even jump off and injure themselves) and/or mess up there!
