Hi All hope your all well,, i am here about my zoobie doo,, 10 yr old rottweiler i thought may have hip problems or arthritis as he had been limping on his back leg,, well results are in, he had xrays of hips and knees, bloods done to check kidney liver and so on,, good news is,,  his hips are fine no sign of arthritis as yet, heart strong liver kidneys all good he is basicly a fit and healthy boy for his age and i am over the moon with this news,

Bad news is he has a ruptured ACL, They say needs an op on it right now his on 46ml of metacam and is now wanting to bounce about like his old puppy self again,, of course that would be the meds helping him out with that feeling , so i am having to slow him down a bit as dont want him to hurt himself anymore,,

Anyone got any experience with their dog having an ACL, would be interested in any advice or tips or anything i should be asking the vets before we go for the op,, many thanks in advance,,

Hi - I have just been in touch with a friend I chat with regularly who is well into Rotties.   She has asked me to suggest .....

"......... you join a facebook group called "Rottweiler Straight Talk".    We ALL have vast experience of rottweilers and cruciates and will be willing to help and give advice.  "

I'm sure this will help because it's rife in Rotties.

That's a good fb page to ask on and sadly its all too common ub the breed. There are a couple of different operations and one seems to show up once its been done, leg doesn't always sit right post operation and recovery

Which op is that Sue?
- By suejaw Date 02.02.16 23:46 UTC
From reading posts there is the tplo and also tta, can't recall which is the better one. Might even be another now. Simone I know was telling me that its evident when the surgery has taken place on a certain procedure. I'll ask them and get back to you or if the op asks on the fb group the answer might materialise there.
I can see a number of rotts in the ring which have had the surgery from the way they stand and the joint shows itself now I do believe most have had a certain procedure which has lead to this

thanks i will do that,, I didn't know it was common in my breed , well he is 10 yrs old now and never been in need of a vet for anything in that time, he has always been and still is very lively and loves a good run, guess we are lucky we got this far without any injuries or illness, i do hope he can come back from this ok he loves to run, and i am over the moon that nothing showed up on any of the xrays and bloods he had done, only the knee, i was fearing his hip where going or arthritis had got him and i  worry how long we will have left with him, but he seems very fit and healthy all but this,

Hi Anita
I have a dog going in for this op on Monday (been quoted 600-700!)  It is not a large breed and I've been told that she will have to be crated for 12 weeks after surgery.  And she has to be taken up the garden on a lead for toilet.  Feel sorry for her, it's the same leg that she had a patella op on years ago.  It was a total success and I thought her problems were over.

Hi,
Spoken yo friend who highly recommends tplo, its far better for large breeds and doesn't show post operation if the recovery period is adhered to. Tta does show quite evidently. The latter is cheaper and recovery is quicker but not the best for Rottweilers.
Friend gas said uf you can get to fitzpatricks they are very very good on this operation and they also recommend this one for the breed. Friends own vet couldn't tell which leg had been operated on and had to check his notes to find out.
Hope this helps.

I agree with TPLO....we've had both TPLO & TTA (different dogs) on Labradors....so much happier with the TPLO result although the recovery time for TTA was quicker - 5 weeks as opposed to 8 weeks, although it's been a few years since so things/procedures change over time....

My friend and other acquaintances have had these operations on their dogs recently and if done correctly the tplo isn't noticeable and tta is.

There is also a good fb page called Rottweiler health which may actually be more appropriate if you wanted to ask the question to more Rottweiler owners

to be honest i am not worried about how noticeable it is, i dont show my dog so its not that important to me, all i want is for him to be able to walk and run without pain,

i have been searching on google and seen alot of stuff the recovery seems very long i can see its not going to be an easy time to come, right now i am still awaiting our vets to send over the xrays to another vets who they have referred him to that will be doing the op, this its self is taking to long and i am starting to find something just dont seem right with the whole situation, i called both vet again yesterday and am again left awaiting them calling me back, not happy right now with the service i am getting, i have not even seen the xrays that cost me £358,00 on friday all that happened when we went to pick up our dog and they came out saying they had referred us to another vets who would be calling me up to arrange an appointment,

ohh while i have been typing this the vet doing the op has just rang to say they have just received the xrays and they are not wide enough and they want to take more that will cost me more money plus means another anesthetic for my dog  ,,, please does any of this sound right to you lot,,

Ask for a referral and get them to do the xrays. Sounds like your vets haven't done their job right, or get them to do them again foc!!!
If you get a referral go to fitzpatricks if you can, you can choose where you go. North downs is questionable ay how good they ate as lots of complaints have come about from there.

Thanks Sue but i haven't got an endless pot of money to deal with this and really not sure i could afford fitzpatricks , plus its over an hour away from my home,
i have now spoken to the vets where i have already been referred and we are all booked in for a second set of xrays ,

not very happy with the first vets we went to for the xrays tho and i dont think they will do another lot of xrays FOC,

Didn't know if he was insured or your financial situation, but understand. Lets hope its not cruciate and its a case of needing rest only
- By georgepig [gb] Date 06.02.16 17:26 UTC
When my dog had his done the referral vets took their own X-rays so they could measure the sizes of metalwork they would need, angles to use, etc. it all came as an overall price from there.
The referral vets I went to was over 2.5 hours away from me. And I had to make numerous trips, some on consecutive days.
