Surprised you had to have an expensive wipe and reinstall - I do it myself each time for nothing! I'm surprised about the expensive wipe and install too:-)
As a girly, I don't find it that difficult at all Do you both mean you have had a malware attacks & then wiped your disk to remove it???? as wipeing the disk is the only safe way to ensure youve got rid of the malware.
Prior to the fake Adobe Flashplayer I only ever got caught out once with a succesfull malware attack & that was about 5 years ago - it froze everything, how the shop wiped it I have no idea but suspect they hooked my PC to another PC to do it somehow.
This recent fake adobe flashplayer attack I found the malware in control panel but could not remove it - it was only a few weeks old malware then & as far as my google research goes no one had found a solution other than wipe the disk. Theres still quite a bit about it on google search, including some feedback on the offical adobe site- see blow.....so, to repeat, are you both talking about wipeing a non malware affected disk or a disk infected with malware?????
