My AVG scanner just came up with the message at the link below.

I got caught out with the 'adobe flash player' appx 4 week ago, had to have disk wiped & a reinstilation at £60. I seem to have had am increasing number of malware attack attempts blocked this past few weeks.

Probably not - as I still have no intention of clicking on it ........ :) :)

After giving a warning about malware, how on earth do you think that we are going to click on a link  - it might even be more malware - or other such rubbish ??? :)

There's malware everywhere these days.  A good program - Avast, Spybot - will keep it in check for the most part, although about once a year my system gets scuppered and I have to reinstall.  But, this year I have Avast running for the first time and when the first signs of impending doom were here - clicking one thing, something else opening or clicking something and nothing happening at all - I ran a full, thorough system scan, as detailed as possible, fixed what was found and it's gone back to what passes for normal on this machine :-)

Surprised you had to have an expensive wipe and reinstall - I do it myself each time for nothing!

I'm surprised about the expensive wipe and install too:-)

As a girly, I don't find it that difficult at all :-)

But then, I also have Linux installed on my lappy, which is a far better operating system.

The 'beast' has Windows and I find it really frustrating how quickly the hard drive gets used up, compared with my Linux system.

Ive noticed a significant increase in attempted attacks this past couple of months and had a succesfull attack by that 'adobe flashplayer malware', but it was only very recent in may & got through then.

A good program - Avast, Spybot

Ive got avast & AVG but I think I'll get 'Bitedefender', almost all the 2014 reviews that one comes out top or next to top & its currently on offer for £29 for any one of the 3 optional programs, I mean Google & I think Yahoo were succesfully attacked this past 12 months so there seems to be a serious & sustained increase in the chances of one of them getting through.

I've had around 3 or 4 attempts blocked in this past few of days but that includes the 'suspect' warnings which may or may not be malicious sites.

Nor me :) We used to run Norton, but it became very expensive and heavy on space, so we switched to using the free Microsoft Security Essentials. I have never had a successful virus attack nor needed to have a reinstall in 15+ years. Making sure that all updates are applied promptly and using caution and common sense as to what emails, sites and links etc to avoid ...... :) :)

Do you both mean you have had a malware attacks & then wiped your disk to remove it???? as wipeing the disk is the only safe way to ensure youve got rid of the malware.

Prior to the fake Adobe Flashplayer I only ever got caught out once with a succesfull malware attack & that was about 5 years ago - it froze everything, how the shop wiped it I have no idea but suspect they hooked my PC to another PC to do it somehow.

This recent fake adobe flashplayer attack I found the malware in control panel but could not remove it - it was only a few weeks old malware then & as far as my google research goes no one had found a solution other than wipe the disk. Theres still quite a bit about it on google search, including some feedback on the offical adobe site- see blow.....so, to repeat, are you both talking about wipeing a non malware affected disk or a disk infected with malware?????

Just to add to the above - according to the AVG warning yesterday the description they give sounds very much like the first infection I got mentioned above & everything froze.

Infected disc, I wouldn't go through all the faff of reinstalling otherwise.  The system was affected to the point that it took me hours to get into my documents folders to retrieve files via back ways, because I couldn't get in through the start menu or taskbar/desktop icons, before I could begin.  Reinstalling gave the option of wiping the disc and starting again and it did the trick.

The only time I've had to abandon completely was a number of years ago now, when an attack was so nasty the disc couldn't be saved at all.  IT friend of mine tried but no joy.  That's when I bought the computer I'm on now.

Ahh, I understand that,I had an early IBM in late '90's, the disk that came with it wiped the hard drive & went on to reinstall everything.

I have a Dell with XP, all it does is install windows on the XP platform but nothing else, I dont have a problem installing that or anything, its wiping the disk manually in the first place that I cant do.

> I have a Dell with XP

Microsoft are no longer supporting XP so you may be better off upgrading to Windows 8 to reduce your chances of getting another successful attack.

My whole system is way out of date, it has 'Noha woz ere' scratched on it. My only 'heavy' use is video making & editing, I didnt see the need to get another but as the nets gone on 'The Ark' software that came with it is getting past any usefulness to me, the whole system is running slow these days, but I dont want to spend a minimum of £400+ on something I only have limited, but heavy, use for.

Does anyone have any feedback on this refurb trader & that particular system or similar.
