Topic Dog Boards / Health / quick Q on thornit and ear cleaning
- By agilabs Date 09.08.13 19:38 UTC
I've lost the instructions that came with my thornit and it's ages since I last used it, can anyone tell me how often I should be applying it?
also is there anything home made (I seem to remember sth about vinegar and oil?) that I can use instead of the vets ear cleaner? My dogs all seem to have manky black and smelly ears at the moment and the bottle of ear cleaner is getting pretty low!
thanks

I've used baby oil to clean my dog's ears.   Worked far better than the usual ear cleaner :-)   I usually apply it on cotton wool pads then wipe it out again :-)

Thornit instructions say

"NOT to clean the wax out, but to apply a little on the end of a spoon to the inner ear, but not the ear hole, twice a day for 1- 5 days.  Once the wax starts to move - stop.  The wax will come away pushing out the powder and leaving a clean ear.

A pinch of Thornit in the ear once a week will keep the ears clean."

I've treated the dog's feet at the same time, as scratching the ears can mean that the feet can be affected too.

Hope this helps.

thank you!
I cleaned them the 1st time to shift some of the excess gunk but the Thornit seems to be clearing it up nicely now without more cleaning needed. I'll give baby/olive oil a try next time. I don't like using the vet prescribed cleaners much as some of them seem to be really uncomfortable for the dogs, though the one I have at the moment seems okish, the cleanaural (SP) that they used to give me drove them nuts :-(

Thinking about it though, I did try cleaning my boys ears with olive oil once a few years ago, I used too much and it left an oily patch under his ear down the neck and the next morning he had a really horrible patch of wet-eczema! must be a bit more moderate next time.....................
