I've recently bought an Epson SX535WD and am very pleased with it. Can't comment re iPad sadly (don't have one :-( ) but works very well with a Mac PowerBook. I went for a printer with separate colour cartridges based on overall cost efficiency, and went with this particular model after looking through the Which? reports, feedback on Amazon and other computer reviews and most of all, price.
It's black printing is good, colour printing is very good, it's a scanner and copier too which I actually didn't need, but have since found very useful, copies are very good, black and colour. What I particularly like is the auto duplex facility (think that's what it's called) which basically means you can print back to back without faffing around re-inserting paper and getting the first half dozen all printed wrong! It will take card, but not very heavy duty. That's the one downside for me ... need a rear sheet feeder to print on card. This might prove to be a bit of a big downer for me long term, but if you don't have the need to to much printing on very heavy card, I'd thoroughly recommend. I think the HP printers still have rear paper feeders, so would eliminate this problem. I've previously had HP and they've always lasted very well, but I'm always very impressed with the colour printing of Epsons.
I looked at the Kodak (meant to be the cheapest inks) but based on the Which? reports, the cost of printing was very similar, however, the Kodak printers didn't get as high ratings for black text printing. I started getting all hung up about the dpi's of the printers as I do quite a bit of photo printing, but then decided anything new was going to be a zillion times better than my previous printer (similar age to yours), and it is. Hope this is of some help.
