Earlier this week, a beautiful Flat-Coated Retriever bitch belonging to a friend of a friend was lost to anti-freeze poisoning. Since anti-freeze is sweet, animals are happy to drink it if they come across some in a puddle or in the car park. It takes a very small amount to be fatal, and even licking it off the paws after stepping in a puddle is enough. This problem could easily be solved by putting a taste deterrent in the anti-freeze. I've added a link to an e-petition which is requesting that the government make it a requirement for manufacturers to add a taste deterrent to anti-freeze.

However, it will continue to happen as long as the taste is so attractive to animals. Meanwhile, keeping a washing bowl by the door and washing your dog's paws after a walk is one preventative measure that may save your dog's life.
