Does make you wonder how places get their names doesn't it? But I've always been interested in that, and Britain in general has some classics, not just Somerset. I've always giggled at the river Piddle in Dorset that gave its name to a few towns & villages, which the Victorians in their prudery renamed to Puddle. On a trip to Normandy I did encounter the River Pisse, which proudly displayed its name on a little sign even though it wasn't much more than a medium gush.
I have sometimes dipped into local history on the Web, which now has a lot of Parish records going back to the year dot, some before Domesday, and it's fascinating reading. The Norman conquest really did change things and influenced many of our hamlet/village names.
