My smallest toys (8 to 10 inch tall dogs) go UNDER the babygate even when adults! It's only a 2 ½ inch gap. The toy pups do it all the time with ease. I've never had dogs go through the bars, no matter how small, but the cats do it all the time, adults and kittens -even pregnant queens.

I've not been able to plug the gap under the gate because some cats only go under the gate, some go through the bars, some jump it -and as I have the litter trays at the other side I need them all to be able to get through -and if I make it impossible for a toy dog then it's impossible for a cat as well. Drives me nuts sometimes, I've even considered shutting the door permanently, putting a catflap in it of the sort that only allows microchipped animals through, and ones with the chip numbers you input!
To stop the little dogs and cats getting into the kitchen I cut a door in half and turned the bottom into a stable door, the top into a wire top.
