Topic Dog Boards / General / Dog gate / baby gate ?

I am getting a toy breed puppy soon and want to be able to fasten it safely into the utility while I am cooking etc so it doesn't get stood on, and save the cage for when I am out and bedtime. So I am thinking of getting a baby gate. I quite like the fabric style baby gate which would prevent a toy puppy squeezing through the bars but would like your advice on which is best for pup/adult toy breed .
Thanks in advance.

When we have pups, we just use a normal baby-gate but attach a piece of wood to the bottom half with tie-wraps.  Keeps those little land-sharks back so should work and saves a bit of money as you can get the baby-gates cheap enough.  The fabric ones got really filthy and 'someone' chewed a hole in the fabric and stuck their head through!

Good idea about the extra panel on the baby gate - you could even do this with a perspex panel (easily cleanable & and the pup can see through it) :-)

Do they not chew the wood or is that OK ? Well, better than a chair leg !

And, does anyone know if  the gap is smaller between the bars on a dog gate than a baby gate ? Don't want to end up with a toy breed's head stuck between the bars !

We have baby gates and our toybreed didn't get through the bars even when pup. +ne of gates is a bit higher from the floor to stop our fcr jumping it and mia does do chicken limbo under it ! I would go for metal baby gate and add perspex panel if
worried

None of mine have ever chewed the wood.  I think that's because they can't really get to the bottom part and if they get their heads anywhere near high enough to be able to chew the wood, their only thought is escape!!lol.

My smallest toys (8 to 10 inch tall dogs) go UNDER the babygate even when adults! It's only a 2 ½ inch gap. The toy pups do it all the time with ease. I've never had dogs go through the bars, no matter how small, but the cats do it all the time, adults and kittens -even pregnant queens.  I've not been able to plug the gap under the gate because some cats only go under the gate, some go through the bars, some jump it -and as I have the litter trays at the other side I need them all to be able to get through -and if I make it impossible for a toy dog then it's impossible for a cat as well. Drives me nuts sometimes, I've even considered shutting the door permanently, putting a catflap in it of the sort that only allows microchipped animals through, and ones with the chip numbers you input!

To stop the little dogs and cats getting into the kitchen I cut a door in half and turned the bottom into a stable door, the top into a wire top.

Two of my adult toy dogs can still squeeze through the baby gates with ease!

Eventually I bought some plastic type netting from the garden centre to stop the little blighters. They have never chewed it and are happy enough as they can still see through it.

Have to say I find baby gates invaluable and have three which I bought cheaply from car boot sales.I use one between the kitchen and utility room, one at the bottom of the stairs and one for the top of the stairs.

I did look at the mesh type but decided against them as it would mean climbing over them as they don,t open and it,s easier to wipe down the metal type.

Enjoy your new baby and what breed is he/she?
