In our local free ads a couple of weeks ago was British Bulldog crossed with Bernese and the mother was the bulldog!  They seemed quite proud of their litter as well..and they were ONLY asking £250 for them...

Iv got a better one... this week I saw a Bullmastiff x Jackrussel litter, I cant even imagine what they are going to look like as adults.

The strangest cross I have ever seen advertised was British Bulldog x Chinese crested, no pictures though, I just kept visualising bald bulldogs with tufty bits. The mind boggles :(

I still think mines the best.
A cockrott!!!!
Not that I would EVER cross breed and both my Rottie and Am cocker are neutered!!!!!
Lea :)
And labs,(sorry just saw your post) thats just wierd, are they trying to recreate a pug?????

I just find a lot of them upsetting - some of the random crosses out there aren't as dramatically outlandish as these but can still be so damaging for the poor dogs.

My Raine is a great example of it - 3/4 lab, 1/4 working line malinois.  She looks very lab-ish, so the owners' immediate assumption was that she would be uber friendly, bombproof and easy-going, wouldn't hurt a fly, ideal family dog etc.  No-one considered the sire's input at all.

The incorrect assumption that she was basically a lab led to poor handling, then poor training methods, recurring illness through stress and ultimately, rehoming to me due to serious aggression caused by growing up in that environment.  Had they learned a bit about the mali side - not just seen a cute lab X - things may have turned out very differently.  Fortunately I've researched malis on and off for years so knew what I was getting into when I took her - shame they couldn't do the same.

Random crosses are bad enough in themselves but the repurcussions can be huge for the poor dogs :-(

Husky cross hound is quite common. Siberian x Scent hound is found quite often in the backgrounds of Alaskan huskies and even some Eurohounds. Sight hounds are sometimes used but not so popular.

Usually the crosses are done with a purpose to the working sleddog/sprint running open classes at Sleddog Rallies, they beat the Siberians hands down. I have noticed the odd 'accidental' litter creeping in the pet world but it usually still remains within the sleddog associations and they are normally kept by the breeder or sold to other mushers. The background/pedigree of these racing sleddogs are taken quite seriously.

Looks do not matter in racing :o) only speed and endurance. Yes some of those puppies are as ugly as sin some dogs grow up to look better........ then again some have a face only a mother could love.

Aaa but there in lies the difference those crosses were done for working ability and nobody is really upset about cross bred dogs as many breeds were created that way, its that the crosses have no thought behind them or job to do other than monetary gain and as someone else pointed out may look like one breed but have the temprement of the other. Take my example Bullmastiff jack mix, imagine the bullmastiff size but with the drive and snippy nature of the jack all rolled into one, not a happy medium and probably not the best family dog.

There's someone on a forum I go on, who has a St Bernard cross Poodle.... a rescue dog, but whoever thought of that one??? Apparently he's mahoosive, very very curly, and still growing!
- By triona [gb] Date 08.06.11 22:04 UTC
That sounds like a lot of dog to groom!

Whilst at a rescue centre I met an extremely strange looking dog - turned out to be an Irish Setter X JRT it looked like a very large JRT with a red wirey coat and spaniel ears........

It looked nearly as silly as the BullShitz on britains got talent (i'll let you work that one out)

Surely some of these crosses could be very dangerous for the bitches giving birth?

in our local free paper this week there is a litter of labradoodles for sale. I know this is a common cross now but what i couldn't understand is that the advert says that the pups have excellent pedigree's?
- By Nikita [gb] Date 09.06.11 08:38 UTC
They may well have - if both parents are purebreds then they could have absolutely fantastic pedigrees :-)

Technically actually any dog has a pedigree - it's just a record of who their ancestors were, that's all.

If the advertisers were trying to sell these as 'purebred' labradoodles, that would be different.
- By ally449 [gb] Date 09.06.11 08:41 UTC
ah, i see. I thought the advert should have read both parents have fantastic pedigree's. :)
