Always use positive re-inforcement. Reward good behaviour and take away attention/reward for 'bad' behaviour. It helps to find out whether your dog is people-motivated, food-motivated or toy-motivated. This will help determine the best reward for your dog.

Have you looked into clicker training at all? Dogs often learn quite quickly with clicker training and it can be used to teach them some pretty cool tricks. The basics can be handy in all sorts of situations. As a starter I would go to a puppy class and learn the basics there. Make sure you find a good one that only uses positive reinforcement techniques.

Have a read of The Puppy Primer - it's an excellent book for new and experienced puppy owners alike.  Shows you how to train with positive reinforcement and is full of easy steps and practical examples

Always find that teaching sit, stand and down is easy at 8 weeks as they do it all the time and all you have to do is reward the action. Recall is more difficult if you have a clingy pup because they are always with you but if you have a pup that is more independent then they will nearly always come to you if you make the right sort of noises and then you reward.

Agree learning the basic at a class is the way to start.
