Always use positive re-inforcement. Reward good behaviour and take away attention/reward for 'bad' behaviour. It helps to find out whether your dog is people-motivated, food-motivated or toy-motivated. This will help determine the best reward for your dog.
Have you looked into clicker training at all? Dogs often learn quite quickly with clicker training and it can be used to teach them some pretty cool tricks. The basics can be handy in all sorts of situations. As a starter I would go to a puppy class and learn the basics there. Make sure you find a good one that only uses positive reinforcement techniques.
