Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Safe4pets disinfectant - any experience?

Hi all

Am trying to get myself organised for our imminent arrival & after calling the company which makes the Parvo virucide I've decided to rule it out. They sounded horrified at the suggestion that it could be used to wipe over dog's feet, etc. They stressed it could be used to clean out whelping areas but must be air dried thoroughly before introducing the pups back. I'm thinking I'll not actually get the stuff now as we don't have kennels, the pups will be reared indoors, and I need something which carries absolutley no risk to the pups or my adult dogs.

Now during my research, I've come across Safe4pets disinfectant. They claim it's fine to use diluted directly on the dogs, is completley safe to mop floor areas/whelping areas over, and also is suitable for soaking a mat at the threshold, for people/dogs to walk over.

Has anyone here used it? or is there something else which is suitable, which perhaps won't be quite so costly. I'm not sure I used the right stuff last time, and when cleaning out the whelping box daily, and having a mop and bucket always handy with disinfectant in as pups are more active, I need something which can be used without fear of harm to the pups.

Haven't purchased anything yet, but as I explained to my OH last night, I need to start gathering things together as we've only got a little over 3 weeks to go.....

Thanks in advance.

I've used it and found no problems. It comes in a 5 litre container and last forever as you dilute it right down.

Thanks Alison. Do you purchase directly from them or is there somewhere cheaper?

No, I got it directly from them. That was about 4 years ago. Couple of litters later and I have still got some left.

I don't think there is any need to wipe dogs feet with anything and just use bleach and floor washing stuff on the floors of my kitchen, wipe out the dog crate with diluted dettol. People and animals need contact with germs to build up immunity.
My dogs and family come and go as usual when we have puppies, no taking off shoes, no changing clothes, no special rules apply.

I agree with Liz R we are fast becoming a nation of fearful people and our children and animals are not able to withstand contact with any bug/virus asthma and  skin complaints abound.I do wonder if all these cleaning chemicals etc are responsible for the huge rise in cancers both in human and animals
As a farmer I have an abundance of muck and mud much finds its way to kitchen floor. At this moment there is a litter in whelping box next to the Rayburn. The other 10 dogs are in and out during the day and the floor is wiped over with hot water and soap if it gets bad I use a steamer.

I do use Sorgene5 for the kennels puppy pens and the lambing shed have done for years. They are not cleaned every day once a week is more than enough use of a strong disinfectant. No animal has had any adverse reaction. I covers many diseases including Foot And Mouth Do let the pups meet some dirt and muck so they can start building up their much needed life immunity.Sorgene5 can be bought from any good agricultural dealers.

I use Safe4 products and have had no adverse reactions from me or my dogs
by using their products :)

I use the disinfectant and the odour killer for my shingle garden.
The disinfectant also gets used when I have a litter (twice in the 9yrs)
Also got some lovely hand disinfectant as a freebie when I ordered my disinfectant once.

Very prompt and friendly service from the company.
Have used them for a number of years now (over 9 years).

They do test their products and have DEFRA approval for use etc.
You can download this info from their website.

Thanks for the replies, I think I'm going to get some :).

Re the responses regarding building up immunity and not keeping the puppies in a too-sterile environment, I would say I do agree... to a certain point. I have another dog who goes out into the community daily, meeting/playing with other dogs. He has access to the kitchen which is off my puppy room. The pups are also allowed to run about in the kitchen. Also, their mum was having short walks out and about at around 2 weeks and there is no way I'd let her back in with the pups without giving her a wipe over.

I must admit though, the vet did come in to check mum/pups over at 24 hours and he did step right into the whelping box - with his shoes on! Now I almost had a heart attack!! What if he had a dog with Parvo into the vets? My mind was going at 100 miles an hour the whole time he was at our house. Needless to say when he left, the vetbed was put in the washing machine!!

Our pups will spend quite a lot of time outdoors when they're older weather permitting, and there's not much chance of disinfecting grass...lol! Mind you, the puppy room, although tiled, did start to smell a bit after a few weeks. Bleached water soon sorted that out, but the pups couldn't come back in until it had dried.

I just want to find a pet friendly do-all cleaner/disinfectant which will do the all-round job...
