I am really struggling to know what to do for the best here. I have got Milo and Shady booked into the vets for titre tests today, however there has been a few cases of parvo in our area and I am paronid about them getting it, especially Milo with all his problems and the fact he is partial to a snack on dog and fox poo when out on his walks.
Milo has never had a booster since his puppy jabs and is now 4 years old but his titre readings have always been ok. Shady had her first booster about 18 months ago as her titre readings had gone down to borderline.
I spoke to my insurance company last night and they said if the dogs are not up to date with thier vaccinations then they won't cover treatment if they get parvo and I would not be able to afford to have them treated myself on my income.
So in the end last night I thought I will just take them and have Shadys booster done and Milo just done for parvo and pray he doesn't react fatally against it.
But now Shady has had me up all night being sick, so she won't be able to have her booster and I am worried that if I booster Milo for Parvo he may be harbouring whatever is wrong with Shady as I am 99.9% certain she hasn't eaten anything to make her sick.
I don't want to put Milos parvo jab off though if he is fine now I have made my decision as I don't want to risk him getting it.
What would you all do?

Hi bev

nobody can truly advise you on what is best long term, although obviously your vet - as a professional - should have an input because along with you s/he knows your own dogs personally, is aware of any long term health issues plus any local/regional outbreaks that require immunisation against etc.  In the end these all have to be weighed up by you as to what is or isn't the least risky, in particular for Milo.

Personally I would not consider vaccinating either dog immediately in case whatever is making Shady ill is still developing in Milo.  No dog that is in poor health should be vaccinated - that's the recommendation of the pros BTW, not just me :)  It will give you a little more time to weigh up the pros and cons but ultimately the decision is yours.

Hope they're both OK soon,
best wishes Teri

Thanks Teri, I really appreciate your input and I know nobody can truly advise I do this or that, I just wanted to get peoples opinions as to what they may think they would decide to do in a similar situation.
Your opinion has been very helpful thankyou again.

Why not phone your vet up, without taking the dogs in, and ask their opinion.

I think that is one of the things Teri mentioned :-)

She did indeed but I'm sure she did not mind me adding a phone call might do it :-)

Thanks everyone.
I went to the vets today with milo and discussed it and she said with milos allergies and problems it would be far wiser to do the titre test first as it was always going to be a risk giving him any vaccination and to do it if he already has enough immunity would be a needless risk.
So blood has been taken and will wait for the results.
I also had Shady tested today to as her booster would be due.
Poor Shady has been so poorly being sick and high tempreture, since last night.  i took a urine sample with me as she has been weeing a lot this last week or two and leaking too, and just not been quite herself.  Vet said her urine was very dilute which could mean the kidneys were not processing it properly, and if her kidneys are the problem then that could have caused the high tempreture and sickenss.
She has had an antibiotic and anti sickness jab but if she is no better tomorrow she has to go back for more investigation.
Lets hope she feels better tomorrow.

Well your vet sounds extremely understanding and confident of how best to proceed so fingers crossed the titre levels are satisfactory and everything else crossed Shady's prognosis confirms that with her meds in place she's already on the road to a speedy recovery.

I hope you feel better soon too - it's easy to feel low when you're in a quandary about the next best move.

Thanks for the update,
Teri :)
