Hi,

Can anyone help me. I already have two older dogs and two weeks ago i got a 6 month old tibetan terrier from a breeder who was going to keep her but decided she wouldn't show well, anyway she has always lived in kennels so it's been a big learning curve for us both.
The toilet training is going well in the day apart from a couple of accidents but at night she wets on her bed instead of on the floor which my previous dogs did as puppies. i can't keep washing the bed as it's too big so how can i stop this.
I tried taking the bed away last night and put a couple towels down instead, this seemed to be better but i was woken up from 2am this morning with her banging around and chewing things in the utility room, so presumed this wasn't comfy enough for her to sleep though the night.
Should i try getting a crate and if so will she cry all night because my other dogs arn't in it to.

Hope someone can help, wondering if getting a kennel dog was a big mistake and feeling very tired.

you have only had her for two weeks so dont panic!
what is she like during the day does she have accidents in the house is she doing little pees or straining, if she does then she may well have a water infection so take a sample to the vet, this could possibly be why she cant settle as she is uncomfortable.
If she is clean throughout the day I would treat her as a 8 wk old pup and begin basic toilet training methods.take her out to the toilet every half hour or so with a toilet command , feed her last meal as early as possible in the evening give her plenty of time to empty her bladder for her last wee at night and stay with her so that you know she has been.
You could go as far as set your clock for 3 in the morning and take her out for a wee then back to bed without talking to her.
Put vet bed in her crate so she is comfortable but not lying in her own urine if she has an accident .
Dont panic she need you to show her how you wish her to behave in the home after being in kennels.

good luck

i myself have brought in 4 older kennel dogs from a breeder. all of which fortunately were very good with the toilet training. however my partner then brought in a rescue lurcher who weed all the time even if the door was open. i stopped this by feeding her where she was weeing. as you know dogs are generally clean animals and wont dirty where they eat. offer water around an hour or two before  you go to bed. then only put a very small amount down if you feel you need to. make her go out for 10 minutes before you go to bed for the night, even if she doesnt want to.
every dog has accidents as you know and probably wont mind if it is an accident. Experts also say pups around that age can only hold for around 4-5 hours so perhaps a mid night gerden break might help, even though it will be a pain but less of a pain than washing a bed every day.
good luck

hi,

during the day she is fine as long as i take her out every hour or two and after feeding etc. we have had a couple of accidents but thats to be expected.
i wonder if this is more about scent marking than lack of control,as when i first got her she went straight for the dog bed and did a couple of little wees. if thats the case do i wash the bed or just leave it and hope because she's already marked it she want feel the need to do it again.

i would probably be inclined to leave it to see if she carries on. she;s young and in a new home so everything is strange and may not have caught on yet.

Hi,

Hang on in there - it is still early days.

I would agree with other posts and go back to toilet training as if she was an 8 week old puppy.  My bitch was harder to train than other dogs we have owned.  We crate trained her and I would take her out late at night and make sure she did a wee.  Then, I'd get up at about 5am (oh dear), bring her out of her crate to the same toilet spot outside and ask her to do a wee.  If she didn't, I popped her back in her crate for 5 mins or so and then went back and repeated the process.  She picked up really quickly what I was asking of her and gradually I was able to leave her until a more reasonable time.  There were a few accidents, but, with a routine and some patience it got sorted.  The benefit of having a 'word' command is now when we are out we can ask her to do her wee and she just gets on with it. Also, the benefit of the routine we used means that now even though her crate is always left open, she waits until I go get her in the morning, so, no chewing problems.

I would also agree with other post, get some vet bed (or similar) as it washes brilliantly and dries well, lasts for ages.  I pop mine in the tumble dryer, not sure if you are supposed to but it works for me. Also, the top will remain dry if she is wetting.

Is it worth making sure the area she is sleeping in is washed with something to make sure the urine smell is definately gone, like a biological powder?

Good Luck and let us know how it goes.........

Probably not warm enough either when the heating goes off in the night.  I would get a crate even if you leave the door open so that you can cover the sides and make a cosier place for her.

Hi,

Had two quiet nights at last. I put the bed back in the utility room and decided if she goes to the toilet on it then unless it's really bad i'mjust going to leave it and luckily she seems to of controlled herself. not only that but she's slept from 10pm till about 6ish with no banging around in the night.
fingers crossed this will continue.Had one accident in the lounge yesterday but put her straight outside to finish. it was my fault as i didn't take her out for a couple of hours(hopefully there's light at the end of the tunnel). Apart from the wee thing I've never had such a calm dog at 6 months old.
