I was just wondering what advice people could offer regarding obedience training.

We have a puppy and would like to do obedience training but there is so many different methods available now.

I do like the idea of the clicker training where you use a clicker word and food.

As anyone trained this methods and what are your thoughts please.

Also can you recommend a trainer.  I have heard owners mention training days and weekends, who does these.

Any advice would be appreciated, would like to keep a happy dog willing to work and not forced.

If you go to the website of the Association of Pet Dog Trainers (click on the link) you should be able to find someone who'll be able to help in your area. Good luck!

If you have the time it is also worth going along to view a few classes before signing up with a club to see if you are happy with the atmosphere, the way they do things etc.  Good luck with your new pup!

Thank you for that really appreciate it.

Went to check a local club out tonight, no way are we training there.

It was all check chains and snatching the dog across.  Didn't look nice and the dogs didnt seem happy so wont be doing this type of training.

But thank you all for your help

Was that an apdt trainer? If so, they need to be reported.

The class I go to trains with the clicker.  I was a bit dubious at first but my dog has proved very receptive to it.  Timing is key and the clicker gives you the abiilty to very accurately mark the desired behaviour.  We've just started Gold and we now need to learn a few new things.  Last week, as my boy wasn't getting the click he thought he deserved (he needed to be on the mat), he just went through his entire routine of paws, twists, sits, downs - anything he could think of!! :)  I only have to slip the clicker on my wrist for him to start his odd routine...

If you were near Weston Super Mare I could recommend a great APD Trainer :)
