The class I go to trains with the clicker. I was a bit dubious at first but my dog has proved very receptive to it. Timing is key and the clicker gives you the abiilty to very accurately mark the desired behaviour. We've just started Gold and we now need to learn a few new things. Last week, as my boy wasn't getting the click he thought he deserved (he needed to be on the mat), he just went through his entire routine of paws, twists, sits, downs - anything he could think of!! :) I only have to slip the clicker on my wrist for him to start his odd routine...
