Topic Dog Boards / Health / Sore throat?

Just wondering if dogs can get sore throats and if so, what can you do for them?
My girl is a bit under the weather today although she was fine first thing, chasing rabbits out on a walk. don't think she picked anything up she shouldn't have. Been to Driffield ch show, alone, not with her, and when I got home she wasn't right and then seemed to be struggling to eat her food when I fed them. she also appears to be chomping ( can't think of a better description) ever so slightly with her mouth. she has nothing stuck in her mouth but is obviously bothered by something with it.
any ideas anyone?

Hello you, long time no see :)

I guess they can get throat infections just like the rest of us but the ref to chomping IMO suggests actually in the mouth (a sign of discomfort when eating) so most likely to be one of sore gums, something caught between teeth or something on/irritating the roof of the mouth .....

Are you able to get a really good look all around her teeth, gums, pallate and tongue (top and bottom)?  One of my girls behaved similarly and had a small shard of bone caught in the inside of her upper molar and roof of the mouth which was obviously bothering her when eating but not so obvious prior to that (it had been an earlier meal that she'd eaten rmbs).  It took a lengthy period of poking around to find the cause and a little more on top to remove it.

HTH, Teri

My girl had a throat infection a couple of years ago.  The only symptoms were lethargy and a bit of a cough.  When the vet examined her, he said her tonsils were inflamed and her glands were a bit swollen.  She needed an antibiotic to clear it up but was fine within a few days.

Hi. I do visit and read, but haven't put anything on much, I admit :o)
Many thanks for your responses. I am very happy to say that she is a much better girl this morning. In fact she gobbled her meal down! so whatever it was that was the matter with her seems to have rectified itself thank goodness. I did manage to get a good look on her mouth, teeth, gums etc last night but couldn't see anything. If only they could talk & tell us ;o)
