Is fibre important in a dogs diet?

I've noticed that the food I'm using has only 2.2% fibre, the food I've used before had 4%.

Is it better to go for a higher or lower fibre content?

Hi ya Clio,
The fibre used tends to be 'crude fibre', just roughage (rice, corn hulls for example) of little nutritional value and provides little to no energy.

Used as a 'filler' (makes the dog feel full without the calorie intake) High Fibre foods produced are aimed at the weight loss market, or are used to assist some conditions such as impacted or infected anal glands, diabetes to name a couple.

Too much fibre can inhinit the absorbtion of minerals and some vitamins.

Your fine and Dandy with your 2% :-D

I think it will depend on the dog.  One of mine tended to constipation unless on a food of about 3% fibre and more than one has had anal gland emptying sorted out with the same :-)

Agree with Isabel - amount of fibre in a diet is dog dependent.

Even though both my dogs are the same breed, about same age, Abby's digestive system works at a different speed than Rudi's - quiet literally as measured by frequency and consistency of output!  :-)  Its been the case since she was a puppy, regardless of what I fed. So with Abby, I need to add extra fibre  (oat bran) to keep anal gland "issues" under control.
