Hi all,
Charlie has just started sneezing (since LKA).
Sometimes it is normal sneezing and sometimes it is the reverse sneezing. He has no other symptoms and is his normal naughty self!
Any ideas what this is? I'm trying to decide if we should take him to our ringcraft Christmas party tonight, but I would hate to think Charlie has passed something on to all his friends at ringcraft and they spend the holiday sneezing!! :(
BTW (no coughing at all)

Do you think he might have something up his nose?  I know it's the wrong time of year for grass seeds but I've heard of blades of grass getting stuck up there.

Sounds like an allergic reaction sort of thing, I have a dog that does this after a roll on the carpet.  Dust allergy lol!  Perhaps you were near one of the breeds that "allegedly" use grooming sprays?

Hi Paula,

it's a little soon following LKA for KC to be the most likely cause but I wouldn't rule it out entirely because it is rife at the moment and like any vrisu new strains will be developing all the time and possibly different incubation periods  :(  Of my dogs which have caught KC over the years, most have been sneezing rather than coughing so it is definitely a symptom of the virus despite the name.

It could of course be something you've used around the house - air freshener, cleaning fluid on floors, your own perfume or hairspray (mine go VERY dramatic with that - digging and all sorts LOL).

TBH though, were this my dog I'd miss the party - someone may have a litter or elderly/poorly dog at home and innocently bring a younger dog along which then takes back kennel cough.  It is very dangerous to dogs, can even be fatal, with already compromised health so IMO not fair to put anyone at risk, however small. Sorry :(

Now that you mention it, there were a few people on benches near to us that did spray their dogs with something before brushing/wiping them, so maybe?
Also if Charlie is going to be allergic to dust, the wood shavings used for the exercise area may not have helped?
I'll have a look up his nose when OH can help hold him still, Charlie doesn't do still!!! :)
I'm looking at him now and he seems to have a few under-the-skin little pink spots (that can just about be seen) on his head, so I'm defiantly thinking an allergy may be right.
Do you think I should give piriton a try, I have read that some people use it on their dogs?
What dose should be given to a 28kg puppy!!! ;)

If he's just started sneezing today I'd think it unlikely to be related to a grooming spray or sawdust on Fri/Sat    That doesn't mean it's not a reaction to something else but being Tuesday, *unless viral*, personally I'd rule out the dog show!

Thanks Teri,
Yes you are probably right, we will leave Charlie at home tonight, just to be on the safe side.
I did notice a dog of our breed coughing at LKA, and I am wondering if it was the dreaded KC! :(  We only just had it in September/October and now I'm paranoid about it so told OH to keep Charlie away from the dog just in case (OH thought I was acting like an over protective mother!!) but I know it can travel on the air.
Only down side to showing so far, my dogs have never caught it before!!

Sorry, Just to clear something up so that you can help me more, He started sneezing Sunday. It is only occasional sneezing, and my 3 other dogs (Who I don't show) have no sneezing at all.
I will give the party a miss and monitor him for further signs of KC.
Thanks All
Paula

Hi Paula,

as I said it's very early for something which he may have picked up at LKA (although you did say before that he had *just* started sneezing?).  Could he possibly have already picked it up from ringcraft?  Was he there in say two weeks before the show?  KC spreads like wildfire and dogs are carrying the virus before the outward signs are there hence why in some cases (but not all :( ) dogs only begin to display signs at Club or shows.  Often in these places water bowls are regularly shared too - something I never allow my dogs to do.

As to your other dogs not being affected (if it is KC at all of course), I've not so far had all of mine showing symptoms when one is ill.  Perhaps two show signs but there's always been at least one over the years which hasn't - although I still treat the 'clear' dog the same way and don't mix at training clubs, shows etc.

Hi Terri,
We didn't go to ringcraft but we did go to BUBA champ show, and a local open show on 6th and 7th Dec.
We have rang and left a message for our ringcraft trainer to say we won't be going, so they will be short a few mince pies :)
Can they just sneeze with KC? or will he eventually start to cough if it is KC? just so that I know if a trip to the vet is needed?
Thanks again
Paula

Hi Paula,

Most of mine with KC have been sneezers rather than coughers LOL.  If it is KC he may go on to start coughing but may not.  I give mine a baby cough mixture to sooth throats - usually benylin but when my most recent caught it as a baby (at ring craft :( ) he got baby Tixylicks (sp) - blackcurrant flavour - and LOVED it :-D  The others have all needed it syringed down their throats but he happily lapped it up from a saucer!

Sorry you're missing your party - if only everyone was as responsible there wouldn't be so many outbreaks of this horrible thing in the firsst place.

{{{hugs}}} to 'the boy' and you too
Teri :)
