Sox is a 4 year old Staffie and has had some problems with vision over the last 6 months. We took him to the vet a while ago and they couldnt see anything obvious wrong and advised us to have it looked again now which we have done tonight. His eyes are very dark brown and in certain lights have appeared to have a green tint to them in the past but I think this is more prominent now which the vet confirmed when she said that his eyes were very "opaque". He has demonstrated some symptoms of vision loss too recently and on occassions cant see something thats right in front of him but at other times will look at the birds in the sky!!! - I think this depends on the light. The vet said that his eyes appear to be refracting a lot of light too. She will be referring him to a specialist shortly but in the meantime has anyone experienced anything like this before?

FYI He gets the occassional 'eye bogey' but no discharge as such, no sign of infection or inflammation, no squinting and the green tint applies to both eyes equally, he, as far as I know, has never suffered any trauma to his eyes and no cat scratches and again as far as we know has no underlying medical conditions.

hi Caroline, my staffy gets the green eyed look too and it is especially prominent in photos.  I have no concerns about her vision but maybe it is a staffy thing.

I'd go to an eye specialist.  You could maybe go to the ones who do the eye testing around the country at dog shows, fee is fairly small and they'd be able to advise you on what it could be.

We are seeing a specialist on Xmas Eve so we should know more follwing that.

Hi, yes I think he has always had it to an extent and I think its to do with how dark their eyes are. I have noticed it in photos too. However, his sight is deteriorating and the glaze seems to be getting worse so i know for him its an issue. Im so pleased that its not an issue for your little one tho! Will let you know how we get on.

Sounds as though it might be the start of cateracts, these will look like a cloudy film over the pupil. The green tint though is common. Dogs in photos often have "green eye" rather than the human red eye. Infact depending on the colour of their tapetum it could be yellow, blue or red.

Once advanced they can be operated on but there are products that claim to help sort them out before they get that bad.

One product is Angels Delight- I actually use it as a tear stain remover but it says that it also helps with cateracts. To be honest I don't know if it does- It is excellent as a tear stain preventer and I tend to trust the makers having used other natural products that they make. Might help with the cateracts and the eye bogey at the same time.
