Topic Dog Boards / General / I need to rant!!!!

Sorry i have to rant as i am not amused.

Went to a fun dog show today which was in aid of a breed rescue. The day itself was a bit of a wash out due to weather. Anyway myself and my boy had a good day.
Some female asked me what i thought of her dog, well i asked what cross it was. She mentioned Staffy cross with another terrier breed. She asked me what i thought of her dog, i said he was calm(which to be fair he was, compared to most other dogs there) She said that she thought so highly of him that she was going to use him at stud!! I was thinking what?? She had very little common sense from the way she spoke and would be what i call a simple lady.
There was no way i was going to get on my high horse with her, had no idea what others nearby thought of all this cross breeding malarky with Staffs. Also not sure she would of totally understood what i was saying to her. Its bad enough as it is without adding to the problem..

Anyway my rant is with all these cross breeds, especially Staffs, why would you encourage and help the problem escalate???

You could have just explained to her, in a friendly calm way that although her boy is lovely there are already lots of cross breed staffies in rescue and that people shouldn't deliberately breed more. She may have taken it all on board.

I know i could of explained to her, but i think i would of been there a long time and may of had to go over and over things a few times. Come to think of it i wish i had said something.. Now i feel silly for ranting here and not doing anything about it.

Do you know if her dog was a rescue?
- By suejaw Date 14.12.08 20:18 UTC
I can't for the life of me recall if it was a rescue or not.

I was just wondering as most rescues do not rehome entire dogs but if she got him as a pup they may never have checked up if he was neutered. The pounds over here are full with Staffies and Staffie x, I am sure it's the same in the UK. I simply don't understand people... :(

you can only give advise i suppose , whether it is heeded is another matter, for anyone to use a dog at stud then surely you need a demand for a stud dog and despite what many believe the demand for most pedigrees never mind crosses is low, it is a pity so many people want to start breeding and studding their dogs after a few minutes in the dogs, this goes for owners of pedigrees as well as crosses.i believe i know the show/fun day you mentioned and having seen some photos from the day i must say that some fantastic athletic looking dogs were also present that in my view put the top kc shows to shame.nice to see it also made over £400 for breed rescues
just to add, some very good dogs come from crosses, i know many lurcher owners like a touch of bull blood for their working stock for pest control, not everything is black and white, some crosses are infact better for certain jobs than any pedigree, perhaps this is where the lady was headed, if you only get half the story then it is impossible really to debate the pro's and cons properly.

The way she spoke about her dog it was like well he is well behaved then he is good enough to be used at stud. He is not worked in anyway and is a pet. Just because he is calm and well behaved doesn't mean its good enough to be used at stud..
Its a like a friend of mine who went through the whole thing and i convinced her not to use him without at the very least getting him hip and elbowed scored and then to join some breed clubs, neither was she interested in.. Her hubby is totally against using him at stud, and it tends to be what he says goes..She thinks as her boy is so great then just by personality alone he is good enough to use in her eyes.. She has not a clue about the breed standard for a GSD and as she does work/show him then he would only be used with another local pet..

Lurchers have their uses, for anyone to go into breeding without having a clue what they are doing makes me shudder. In this climate i would be wary of anyone breeding unless they have a list and some more to cover the potential number of pups which may occur. Genuine/decent breeders i would hope would keep the pups until they can find them a home rather than dump them into rescue which you do hear about.

I think perhaps there are ways of explaining or discussing things Sue without you having to get on your high horse.
Perhaps you could have suggested to the lady joining this or another forum to get advice about breeding?  That wouldn't have been taken out of context surely?

I heard the event went very well with lots of money raised for breed rescue, so good things have come out of the event.

Tracey,
I do agree with you that maybe the best way forward was to say something like joining this forum. Anyway i didn't say anything and now i regret not pointing her in the right direction for the best information...

I had a great day and met some lovely people. One couple i'm sure i'll be seeing at local open shows. Shame the weather was not great, its the kind of place i wish the GP would go to, shows that not all Staffs are aggressive. I thought they were a credit to the breed and the owners were lovely.
