Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Progesterone Testing

We have had one progesterone test done on Casie (havent done them for previous breedings, but since she is silent heat, decided to be more "accurate" this time - especially since this will be her last breeding before being spayed)

It said she was no were near ready for breeding.  That was done on Wednesday.

We have the stud here, and she is flagging, and Sonny is very obessive over her.

How accurate is the progesterone testing?  I remember my aunt talking about the dobe she just bred, that the test said she was no were near ready, they bred her anyways, and she had a litter of 8 pups.

Should we follow what we are seeing, or wait until the test says she is ready for breeding.

If the stud is experienced and casie is willing (my girl flags all the time hussy) then I would go with their instinct.

Sonny, has not been used (to the best of our knowledge - purchased from a kennel, as an adult dog, with females running with him all the time) so likelyhood, he has been used, but cant say 100% either way.

What day was the test done, and what was the reading?

The Test was done Wednesday, and showed not elevation in progesterone levels.  Test was redone today, because of how the dogs are acting, and I really want this breeding.  This is definately my last chance to get a pup out of Cas, because she is almost 6.
She started swelling Sunday, and by Monday Sonny was a great stud dog, (ie: will mount anything he can get his paws on right now. lol)

What should the reading be?  My girl was mated a week ago and it was 33.1 I think.

 Do you not have the equivalent of our Breed Record Supplements showing litters registered?

would could contact CKC, but he was in a different province so there is some time delay while they transfer the records.

So the owners have bought him with no knowledge of what he has produced or even if he has produced?

My sister bought him, because of his lines, and that she wanted another min pin.

He has a famous Dog several times in his pedigree, CH Delcrest Gold Nugget.  Even after his death, Nugget is still producing quality puppies, and his name is sought after by many breeders.

The circumstances of the sale, were a nasty divorce, and he had to be rehomed or he would have to be PTS.

From what I understand, he was left with 2 females in his run with him.

I, along with my sister, have very little knowledge of his life before coming to Ontario.  It is very hush hush, but, looking at Sonny now, and seeing his temperment, structure, movement, etc, he is a dog that would complement Casie in every way.  I know his pedigree, and a lot of dogs that have come out of that pedigree, and the temperment on him, you cant beat it!  Just unfortunately, I have little knowledge of his first year.

Sonny was also sold originally on a No Breed Contract - he wasnt supposed to be bred from until attaining Canadian Conformation CH.  With the resale, the contract is voided.  So if he was used, then of course they are going to be hush hush about it, and not want to say either way.

I cant remember what the number was exactly, but something tells me that it is supposed to be between 8-12 and that the number will indecate when breeding should occur.  (like if its 8, then you have a couple days, if its 12 then you need to breed right now.)  I could be off on the numbers, and every lab has a different scale system, so either could be right.  But I dont remember a number being said that was that high, so its probably just a different scale system being used.

I do appoligize for mentioning the breed, in a breeding thread.  It escaped my mind, at the time of writting this, that mentioning the breed was against TOS.  I wish I could go back and edit it out.

My appologies.

I think there are only two different scales, I use the lab at Cambridge. Very briefly and simply, once the progesterone level starts to rise it doubles every 48 hours and ovulation occurs at 18 - 20, bitches should be mated 2 days after ovulation.

So if a bitch had a reading of 5 on Monday, it would be 10 on Wednesday, 20 on Friday, and ovulation would take place, she would then be mated on Sunday. The first test is normally taken on about day 7, if the level isn't high enough another test will be required.

Perrodeaga, how soon after the blood test did you mate the bitch with the 33.1 reading, I would guess from that result that she had ovulated the day before the test was done.

Three days after.  Signs at only 2 weeks gone seem quite good but I'm not holding out much hope due to her age etc.  we will wait and see.  Don't usually have them scanned but will do with her.

Cas hasnt had another Progesterone test, as she is totally accepting of the male.  So we will breed and see what happens.  Like you, I am not to convinced that this will take anyways, with her age, but we will hopefully get a litter out of her.  If she doesnt take, she will be spayed in the spring.
