Can anyone help to advise whether to go for an Ipod Nano or Shuffle or just a good MP3 player?

Dearest Daughters both have requested MP3 players  from Mr Clause - I like the ipod but have heard they aren't worth the money and software isn't great???

So some opinions gratefully received thank you in advance :)

I think technically the iPod doesn't particularly add any value - but oh, they are so purty. I am a sucker for good marketing, packaging and prettiness!

Can't say I have any trouble using iTunes.

I have an ipod and have had no probs with it.  Shop around for whatever you choose and remember M&S do a 2 year warranty as standard, rather than just 12 months, which may be worth considering.  My sis get her chap one from there and it was no more expensive than in many other shops.

Thanks ! Must admit looking around they do look rather swish!!!  And Emily loves anything pink!!!

Oh thanks for that re: M&S.

I'd have a look at online prices before looking at M&S. I normally find their technology bit hugely expensive, I have to say.

Don't know what delivery times are like, but the Apple website itself is meant to be quite competitive, and I believe they'll engrave them free of charge too, although don't quote me.

I know of a lot of people who have had 'issues' with their ipods, me included. They are great little devices and are very sexy.. however aren't as reliable as I would like. Definitely get the longest warranty possible!

I bought my children mp3 a couple yrs back which they asked for and really don't look at anymore- My daughter bought herself an Ipod Touch and thats seems to be the in one here and she always plays it since you can listen with or with out headphones.

My 14 year old daughter has a pink Ipod and absolutely loves it.  I bought myself a Creative Zen MP3 player rather than an Ipod because it also came with a radio and am very pleased with that too.

I think that the Ipod is very popular with my daughters age group and they do come in some great colours.

I got myself an IPOD shuffle recently in the sale, great present at a great price right now.. I never purchase tunes from ITUNES. I tend to download them for free on another site, which i'm sure most of us know about. Rachel if you want that website PM or phone me.

I am on my 3rd ipod now and *touch wood* haven't had any problems with any of them thus far!

My lovely OH has just bought me an 120Gb Ipod classic - its alot bigger than the other 2 ipods I had, but it can hold so many songs - I['m delighted with it!! He got it from Currys, who are currently doing a deal where if you buy an ipod, you get free speakers with it - but I would also pay a visit to your local Apple shop as I have always found the staff in there very helpful.

Another iPod freak Alice!  I'm getting my (whispers) 4th for Christmas.  A touch.  My boss and I were discussing them the other day and feel that you do need different iPods for different things.  I think it was this conversation that led me to asking Santa for another.

I love iPods and don't think I'd look past them for MP3 players.  Especially if they're for youngsters who want the latest, trendiest gadget.

I've never had any problems with mine (touches wood) apart from the first one needing a battery.  OH got one from eBay for a couple of pounds (came from China or somewhere) and fitted it no problem at all.

both me and my eldest daughter have ipods mine just music but my eldest went to barcelona on a school trip last month and loaded a couple of films on it to watch on the plane and if she got bored. so great for music and if you travel a lot for watching films on as well, never had any problems with ours always get the extended warranty, also i have found the ipod shop very handy my old ipod died on me and was about 5 days outside the warranty they still tryed to repair (on the spot) if they can not repair then and there they give you a new replacement, no hanging around waiting for it to be sent off repaired and sent back .
